Sorry I am not sure, there are quite a few nurses on the forum so hopefully they will be along soon to help, I am sure it wouldn't do you any harm to do it though.

Hi I am a RGN 12yrs, thinking of doing the 18 month midwifery conversion before I come over, Is this likely to improve my job prospects out in OZ. Read that pay is worked out in terms of nursing years accrued for newly qualified midwives. Any advice would be much appreciated! Cheers

Hi

I am a qualified as both a nurse and midwife, been offered a job with sponsorship in Perth.

From what I understand you pay reflects the number of years you have been qualified however when you are newly qualified midwife (as you would be if you did the midwifery conversion) you have to get a graduate role and from what I understand these are very rarely given to midwives outside of oz.

You probably have 2 options;

Come to oz with your 12 years nursing experience and you should have no problem getting a job, nurses are just as much in demand as midwives. Then once you've settled apply to do midwifery in oz.

Or

Do midwifery in the UK and work as a RM for a at least a year to allow you not to undertake the graduate programme and work as a experienced midwife.

Hope this helps

Thanks Kirstie!

I think the option of gaining a year in the uk post qualifying is the better option. I know here I would go from top band 6 Nurse to Band 5 and wondered what the salary situation would be in oz. I guess as well as wanting a career change I am trying to maximise the amount of pay I could earn, as Im no spring chicken and dont want to go back to the bottom of the payscale!

Good luck with Perth, It was my first choice but now hoping to go to Melbourne. x

Which ever way you do it they take your total number years of experience into account including your nursing. Unlike here in the UK where you have to drop bands!

Despite being a specialist midwife on a band 7 here in the uk my pay as a normal midwife in oz is a good £15000 more than I earn here for less responsibility.

Good luck with 18 month course it's hellishly intense (or at least it was 14 years when I did it and can't imagine it's changed) but its worth it.

Thanks again Kirstie, its nice to have the reassurance, instead of just guessing! I believe it is still as intense, I did my health visiting degree 5yrs ago and that was tough too! Should have done midwifery then, but wasnt able to. So this is my last chance, cheers for the encouragement. Hope things are fab in Perth its looks bliss my friend is heading there in July x

Your Health visiting qualification Colette may be recognised as a post-graduate qualification, some are/some not for the Family and Child Health Certificate I believe it's called. If I have this wrong then someone will correct it :)

Hi Colette, I've just applied for WA's graduate midwife program. I'm a nurse with 2 years experience and have just finished my 18month midwifery training... thank god! The Kind Edward Memorial Hospital have told me I will be paid based on my nursing experience. I'll let you know how I get on with my application if that will help.:cute:

Thanks Jenpen .I start my midwifery course in September, all the best with your application, it will give me some idea of whether to consolidate for a year in UK or do what you have done, thats if I get through the next 18 months :ssign7:
