Skills Assessment - Cabinetmaker??

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

Well I had done my research on JOINER/CARPENTER for hubby and was well read up on the VETASSESS process, however as cabinetmaker is back on the WA Skills List, my hubby wants to be assessed as a CABINETMAKER.

So my question, who does assessments for cabinetmakers for 176?

Cant see it on the list on the Vetassess website?? Its not Vic Uni as they only assess it for 457s and we are doing a 176.

Any help much appreciated!

kind Regards, Cazmayo

Vetassess dont assess for Cabinetmaker - 176.

Vic Uni dont assess (only for 457) for CAbinetmaker.

Waiting on a response from the TRA.

Hubby only has an apprenticeship completion cert by FAS (government body) (apprenticeship work based)

If the assessment is just paperbased and direct to TRA, is he going to have to do a AQF3 beforehand?

By going under JOINER he would be assessed by Vetassess, and have to do a practical test but get an australian qualification for it.

The more you know, the more confused you get!!!!!

Kind Regards

Cazmayo

Hi Cal

They certainly dont!! Im well versed in the visa procedure, and now Im confused.

Think he needs to do a formal assessment/practical as he is weak in the qualification dept, with just a completion Certificate and not Trade Papers.

Vic Uni where fast replying, Vetassess also, but still waiting for a reply from TRA!!!!!!!!

Need to get moving with things now!!!!

Anyone know how the TRA work????

Do TRA answer emails??????? waiting waiting!!!!! should I phone?

Anyone who did an informal apprenticeship (any trade) and had to go through TRA, did you have to get an AQF3 first??

If so, think it will be quicker and cheaper to get assessed as a joiner instead of a cabinetmaker.

Any cabinetmakers/joiners out there???

Still no response from TRA after a week.

I have read that TRA only assess qualifications.

So if hubby goes Cabinetmaker, I presume he has to pay 3000 for AQF3 and then onto TRA.

If he goes Joiner, he goes Vetassess, process seems to be about 2000, get assessed and get oz qualification.

Just need to check his experience matches Joiner requirements.

I have been going around in circles from Vetassess to TRA.

Vetassess website says that they specialises in assessing Cabinetmakers but when I contact them they say they dont, so info out of date!!!! No wonder people find this process daunting!!!! told me to contact TRA, but no answer after a week!

Getting frustrated!

Hi,cazmayo, I'm just about to submit my paperwork to vetassess for the joiner test. Technically i'm a cabinet maker but i'm having to go the joiner route as it's the most similar to my profession. I was looking at the 'wanted' list and noticed cabinet maker was listed, but vetassess don't test in our region as it comes under region 2 on their site. I have my city and guilds in carpenty and joinery and have been working in cabinetmaking/joinery for 16 years so even though i'm not totally up to speed with everything on the 'tradeset' i'm quite comfortable with most of it and am doing some homework with a joiner buddy to sort that out.

If your hubby is comfortable with static machines and has a reasonable knowledge of joinery he should be ok on the test, that is what i've been reading anyway.

There is a booklet about joiners on the vetassess site and what they require so that might be worth a look if you haven't already.

I believe most have to do a practical or technical assessment which is expensive and the most daunting aspect.

Also it is a bit confusing regarding TRA and vetassess...basically one works for the other bot TRA did take a while to get back and i've found vetassess pretty good so far in getting back.

hope that helps a bit,

Darren

Hi Darren,th thanks for your reply. We were going to do as you are doing, as hubby has varied exp and good experience of static machines. I did the skills list with him for joiner and then cabinetmaker. He did have a few gaps in the list of skills for joiner, but had a good match for cabinetmaker. He then started worrying if he went joiner and then didnt pass. I got onto a company that assess cabinetmaker for an AQF under RPL. It is 3000 dollars which is about 2300 euros. That would mean you do that and then submit to TRA with a cost of just 300 dollars. Also I have been told these guys are very fast once you get your stuff in. So it works out much the same money wise and a better match skillswise.TRA have still not answered me!!!! They dont make it easy do they. Thanks for your advice, and good luck with the practical!!!It will be worth it when we get to Oz (we are Perth bound hopefully).Kind RegardsCazmayo (Ireland)

Hi Guys,

I'm currently going through the RSMS 187 Process (or hoping to!), But first of all i need a positive skills assessment....... So im in exactly the same predicament. it seems nobody assesses Cabinet makers under the 187 program? But they do under the 457? Its looking like i will have to do the same as you both have, ill have to go down the joiner route! Now, this thread is pretty old now so im guessing you guys will be well on your way now...... How did you find the assessment? I have a good knowledge of most aspects of joinery and cabinet making, but have never really done things like roofing work? Plenty of work on static machines though, manufacture and installation. Any help or advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards Mark, WA

Hi Mark,

Not in perth yet but should be by the summer!

The joiners test doesn't really cover roofing which was handy as that is my weakest point. The carpenters do that side of things and were tested in a seperate room to me and one other joiner fella. All we were tested on was drawing a rod for a casement window and constucting a joint from our own rods which was a haunched mortice and tenon. We covered static machines in the test booklet which the tutor goes through with you which basically involved naming certain parts of say.. a rip saw and a few health a safety questions regaring other static machines. We covered stairs and how to calculate them parts of doors and windows, a bit on scaffolding and leveling devices, most of it stuff you just know, but it does help to brush up a little but to be honest, it was a lot more relaxed than i expected and the tutor just wanted us to pass!

hope that helps,

good luck, Darren

Hi Darren, thanks for the reply mate!

So you're perth bound too? It's a great city, and plenty of work on for us guys! Good rates too.

Im assuming you passed it then? Sounds like I'll have to brush up a little bit, but I'm sure ill be ok. Did you have to submit any evidence like photos or suchlike?

Sorry for all the questions, but it's great to be finally getting some sound advice, because the assessing bodies out here are as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike!

So how far are you with your visa now?

Cheers Mark

Hi mark, Perth bound and looking to go in august.. we went a few years ago so have a feel for the place and have family there also so that's handy:)

What sort of rates could i expect as a cabinet maker/joiner? have you found it quite easy getting work? i've a had a look at some job ads in the 'west australian' so i've got a rough idea but would be handy to know.

I passed the skills test and to honest you sort of get a feeling on the day whether you have, as i said they just want you to pass but you have to know what you're doing. Also, they do check your joints and rod for neatness and take a photo of you with it to send to vetassess.

As far as submitting evidence, i take it you mean to vetassess?

I sent pictures of me working and of some furniture i've made and video from my phone using the overhand, spindle, thicknesser and cnc as well as a couple of clips of me making a table. Whether they looked at them or not i don't know, but it's good to send something to reinforce the evidence for your trade. i just copied it to a disc and sent it with my paperwork.

I've got my visa now thanks to alot of the advice i got on here, so no worries about questions.

cheers,

Darren

Hi Darren,

Well you've pretty much answered all my questions that ive been pretty foggy about! Thanks! :notworthy:

As either a Cabinet maker or Joiner in WA a base rate to expect would be $25 ph Bare minimum! But usually it pays between $30 - $40+ ph, with you being an experienced tradesman you won't have any trouble punching for the higher rates, bearing in mind this is all private work. If you are interested in bigger jobs, there's loads of building work just started in the city, and the big companies are always hiring. These projects always have some sort of union attached to them and therefore pay very well, great rates plus all the usual benefits aswell as great overtime rates ($70 - $80 ph). Don't worry about finding work, there's so much happening, and with all the younger generation disappearing into the mines these days, it leaves the trades crying out. The west Australian is a good place to look, also http://www.seek.com.au

I have plenty of pictures and videos of me using machines and manufacturing so i think ill be fine. Still helps to do the homework though!

Ive since started work for myself alongside a colleague, and we are always flat out.

Well ill be in touch with them tomorrow morning and i'll get the ball rolling, i have to be quick because my lawyer is flat out too!

Take it easy mate, i hope ive helped a little bit too.

Mark
