Job opportunties in the North West

Hi everyone

After reading various posts on here, it seems very mixed over in the UK regarding job opportunities. We are heading back end March and are trying to secure jobs before we leave. We will be living in the Manchester area and I am starting to worry that we will be struggling for jobs. My husband is an electrician, he specialises in the left industry and has spoken to recruitment agencies who tell him there are jobs but after applying he doesnt hear back. I am a project manager in a pharmaceutical company and again have seen jobs advertised but cant seem to get a response. Could this be because we are not in the UK yet?

Has anyone else moved back to the North West recently and how have they found the job situation? I realise that all our circumstances are different but if anyone could share their experience I would be really grateful

thanks

Hi

I returned to Merseyside in August last year. My husband works in IT and I work in finance. We did see jobs advertised whilst in Oz so thought it wouldnt be too bad, however once we got back it was a different story. Most jobs seem to be getting hundreds of applicants ( so I am told) and we haven't heard back from so many of them. My husband did manage to find work after two months of looking, however the salaries have dropped considerably in the last couple of years, there are so many people going after jobs that they are getting away with paying a lot less.

I cannot comment on Manchester and the area in which you both work, I do think our industries have been hit pretty badly. If I had known how bad it was here before we left Oz, I think I would have stayed put as we both had perfectly good jobs in Adelaide.

It is worth registering with agencies before you leave, they may be able to give you a better idea.

I hear things arent too good for electricians at the moment, well thats here anyway but i imagine it will probably me like that for most of the UK. Hopefully someone from your area will be able to come along and give you better advice. Im not sure about your job though sorry. I agree with the other poster, sign up for some agencies

best of luck

Things are prettybleak here, I have 15 years experience at a senior level in the construction industry running project in excess of £5m and combined values upto £15M and since last July I have managed to get 4 months of temp roles and the salaries have dropped considerably. I have been applying for loads with agencies and online with very little response in Scotland, North england and the South East. I actually doubt if half the jobs are actually there, agencies tend to advertise just to enable them to see who is out and then hawk the CV around companies with very litle joy.

This is one of the reasons we are trying to get to Oz, I would seriously consider staying put for at least 5 years, especially when it looks like the UK is going back into reccession (was it ever out of it?).
