  1. Hi all really not sure if I have posted this in the most appropriate section so please feel free to move! we moved back to the UK 2 years ago, my first son was born in Australia and my husband is also Australian by birth. I am British born but also have my Australian citizenship. We have recently had our second son, he was born in the UK and I am looking into getting him his Australian passport. I think I have to obtain his "Citizenship by decent" before applying, is that correct? does anyone know if we have to go to the Australian immigration office in London to do all this or whether it can be done via mail? Once I have his "citizenship by decent" are we then able to just apply for his passport? One other question - I assume our first son will be able to give his children Australian citizenship as he was born in Australia, however as our second son is UK born, will his children also be entitled to citizenship should any of this happen in the distant future!! yes I know I am pondering things way in advance but it would help to settle an argument if anyone does know :-) Thanks
  2. Hi, we have transported our 2 dogs back to uk and now have 2 large sky kennels (bought from jet pets in Australia and meet all regulations) for sale. first one carried our bullmastiff and measures 120x80x88 (she had more room than we did on the plane!) second one was modified by jet pets to give extra height and measures 100x68x85 We are based near Manchester if you are interested, we would be asking £50 each thanks
  3. I think it's totally normal to have last minute doubts as its a big move, but it can also be an exciting move too! I remember 7 years ago heading off to Aus all by myself doubting everything at the last minute. It turned out to be the best move ever, made great friends and met my husband there (moved him back to the uk though 3 months ago!). My best way of dealing with it at the time was if it doesn't work out you can always come back, you won't have lost anything and will probably gain do much. Never look back and think what if, just have a smile and think at least I gave it a try :-) good luck
  4. She is 3 and a half. We came back for loads of reasons, the main one being family (hard as I am English but hubby Australian so one family will always lose out), plus cost of living over there and our commute to work were out of control. Loving being back but great memories over there too.
  5. We have just moved back from oz and brought our bullmastiff with us. I am so proud of how she handled the relocation (I guess easier for us with no quarantine) but she did great on the flight. Can't recommend jet pets highly enough. One thing we did was get her sky crate delivered to home a few weeks in advance to get her used to it which worked well. Our bullmastiff suffered bad allergies in oz and her dermatologist said most of his work is from bullmastiffs!! Luckily the allergies have settled down back in the uk. There are plenty of good bullmastiff breeders in oz so the breed does cope well over there. Am sure your dogs will love it, they will just want to be wherever you are, good luck with the move :-)
  6. Hi all We may have only been back a couple of weeks but being home has been even better than I could ever have imagined. After hearing so much doom and gloom about life back in the uk and having all our friends in Oz call us crazy for coming back, I just wanted to say to anyone out there thinking of coming back that you should definately go for it. We have been amazed at how friendly everyone is, it's lovely to walk the dogs in so many different places, the pubs are warm and welcoming and surprisingly the weather has been great too!! So if anyone is having doubts about coming back (I know I had them before leaving Oz) I just wanted to put up a positive post about being back home. You really can't put your finger on it but it's a sense of belonging that you just can't beat. I hope everyone returning has a great time too All the best Sarah
  7. our 2 doggies will be flying home to the UK with us at the end of March. we have used Jetpets and they have been fantastic so far. the Vet came to our house to do the rabies jabs, we are getting their crates delivered to home next week so that they have a chance to get used to them before the flights and give them a good sniff and their seal of approval!! Once they land at Heathrow they will clear them through customs and will even drive them up to our house in the North West. All the paperwork taken care of. Up until this point I cannot recommend them highly enough, fingers crossed I will feel the same when we arrive. All the best to everyone and their furry babies, I hope they all have a safe flight
  8. thanks everyone for the advice. I still have my old UK licence, just need to change this to my married name now so I am hoping I may be ok from the sound of things. My husband is Australian though so may have to let me drive him around for a few weeks until his licence comes through. I think we will make this a priority when we get back and go visit the DVLA. Thanks again though for the help
  9. sorry to hijack the thread with another question, but does anyone know if you can get private car insurance whilst using an Australian licence? I havent had a issue with hire cars but aim but buy our own car and wondered if we could get insurance. Will be applying for UK licence ASAP but heard it can take 3 weeks and dont want a hire car that long, Thanks
  10. Hi both have tried carsales.com.au and even e-bay. I tried www.carswanted.com.au/ aswell but they offered half the value of each car. If we get desperate we will have to try that but as we still owe money on them its a big financial hit. They are 2 great reliable cars, would have thought we would have had loads of people looking
  11. Hi there SYDNEY based - We are heading back to the UK mid to late March and need to sell our 2 cars before we go. We have a black Holden Astra, manual with 65,000km on the clock. Great car and never had a day of trouble with it. Looking at offers around $11,500 but happy to negotiate on that. We also have a silver automatic commodore wagon (old shape), fantastic family car. Has cargo barrier, 4 new tyres, mag wheels and a new battery and again never had any trouble with it. Looking at offers around $15,000 but again happy to chat about this If anyone can help out or knows of anyone who is looking for a car (or even 2 cars) I would really appreciate that. Its the last of the big ticket items we need to get sold before we can start to relax and enjoy the new life back in the UK Thanks everyone
  12. Hi there we are leaving end of March and have 2 cars up for sale if you are interested (Holden Astra 2006 and Holden Commodore Wagon 2007) PM me if you want more info Cheers Sarah
  13. Hi everyone After reading various posts on here, it seems very mixed over in the UK regarding job opportunities. We are heading back end March and are trying to secure jobs before we leave. We will be living in the Manchester area and I am starting to worry that we will be struggling for jobs. My husband is an electrician, he specialises in the left industry and has spoken to recruitment agencies who tell him there are jobs but after applying he doesnt hear back. I am a project manager in a pharmaceutical company and again have seen jobs advertised but cant seem to get a response. Could this be because we are not in the UK yet? Has anyone else moved back to the North West recently and how have they found the job situation? I realise that all our circumstances are different but if anyone could share their experience I would be really grateful thanks
