Import duty for WHV

Recommended Posts

Hi I am looking at shipping my windsurfing equipment over from Ireland to use whilst on my WHV.

Have to sea freight it as too bulky to fly.

Looked up the customs website and it says there is a 15% import duty.

Is this applicable for working holiday?

Thanks, Tom

You need to type up sort of commercial invoice addressed to Aus customs. It's slightly different because this isn't commercial. But the jist of it is you state what you are shipping, the date you ship it, a rough (I mean rough.) Idea of what it is worth and then that you are on a WHV.

Then in big bold letters, you state "This item is for temporary import only." That way they can't charge you duty if you are planning on taking it out of the country again.

Obviously if you don't then leave the country for whatever reason, I.E. Sponsorship, there really isn't anything they can do.

I had to do this sort of thing all the time and work with Australian/American customs every day in my old job. I put it into practice when I went. I needed to ship some stuff over and drew up that document. Everything I shipped, sailed straight through customs no bother.

Hope this helps.
