Hiya

if you are can you recommend a good area to live in for a family, need a house and back garden - its basically hubby in building trade so will be travelling for work so where would you recommend that would be good area to live in that would be fairly central to everywhere.

We were thinking of Edmonton but is that too far out or would we better going north like to Trinity Beach direction/Redlynch.

Is there any areas you would recommend me to avoid or you would recommend

Thanks a mill

Hi Maise

There's a few members who live in Cairns or are in the process of moving there.

People tend to say avoid Manunda, Manoora & Mooroobool. They're not the world's worst suburbs but the housing & suburbs in general tends to be a bit 'tired' looking for want of a better word.

The Northern beaches are nice - Trinity, Kewarra, Clifton, Palm Cove etc and lots of expats tend to head in that direction. We looked there ourselves, but as we're not really the beach type, we chose rainforest instead.

Edmontons a fair way out, but it's not like travelling into the big cities so travelling time wouldn't be that bad. Work is about to start on upgrading a 14 km section of the Bruce Highway from Wrights Creek (south of Edmonton) to Draper Street in the Cairns city centre, so travelling time will improve upon completion.

Generally avoid suburbs that begin with an M...

Some people dont like whitfield either but its quite nice if you want quiet... not a lot there though. You will have to travel for anything.

I personally prefer north of Cairns to south, the beaches you mentioned are quite nice but property is normally more expensive and there are the obvious problems with the weather.

I would consider Redlych if you are looking for a family home its not too far away and the properties are reasonably priced theres also good schools and shopping nearby, also consider nearer to Kuranda (Caravonica and the like) the schools there are good, you could also look at Smithfield... its nice but a little bit further away (closer than trinity beach though) good shopping, schools and activities for the kids.

Having said all of this im assuming that your husband will be driving and given the traffic in Cairns (very little) even Trinity beach etc is not too far.

You will need to have a car each as public transport is basically non-existent and all of the nice areas are too far to walk.

hope this helps
