Guest Jersey Couple
Hi All I know iron chef has an extensive thread but I thought I would ask. My car is being shipped over in a 20ft container on its own and it has a few personal items in the boot. I have all my paperwork from the shipper and my import approval cert from Australia. Question: Can I clear it through customs myself or do I need a customs agent? As for registering, the mechanic who does all the work cars has offered to do the rego and pink slips. Thanks in advance Rob Mona Vale, Sydney
Iron Chef
Hi Rob - given customs agents charge 2/3 of bugger all, it's much safer to let them handle it. I know the process inside out and back the front, and yet I still think it's wiser to let a customs agent handle that side of things.

Iron Chef
That looks about right - a touch high on a couple of charges, but around the mark.
Guest Jersey Couple
Hi Mr Chef Where do you think its high, I thought the $550 valuation fee was a bit steep. Cheers Rob
Iron Chef
Yeah that was one - $400 is generally closer to the mark. Did the agent charge you a fee as well?
AndrewC
I agree with Iron Chef . . false economy not to use a proper customs agent.
Guest Jersey Couple
I am going to ask him to sharpen his pencil on the quote. That is the quote he has given me and I did ask for all costs so I would hope there is not an agents fee on top. I welcome your input. Cheers Rob
Iron Chef
My guys normally charge around the $150 mark, so perhaps he has added it to the valuation fee  The reality is, for the amount of work they have to do, $150 is pretty cheap, probably TOO cheap for them to make a living, so they will generally add a margin to some of the other costs to supplement their income. This is an industry wide practice - personally I'd rather have them charge $300 and show everything else at cost price.
Guest Jersey Couple
Do you mind me asking who you use. Pm me if you like, I sent you a pm on an unrelated matter too. Thanks Rob
