We like Oatlands very much, its a beautiful Georgian town.

Oatlands is about one hours’ drive (84 kilometres/52 miles) north of Hobart or 90 minutes’ south of Launceston.

Employment wise what were you thinking of doing? and welcome to the Tasmania thread.

Oatlands has a population of only about 500 people: it is basically a service town for the surrounding agricultural area which is comprised mostly of large sheep grazing properties.

It is quite picturesque - it has the largest number of Georgian buildings of any town in Australia. The Callington mill there has recently been authentically restored - a traditional Lincolnshire windmill design - and is now producing flour in the traditional way for an artisan bakery there.

Oatlands is about 1200 feet above sea level and can get quite cold in winter. Occasionally the highway around there can be closed because of snow, although that is much rarer now than it used to be.

The daughter of a friend of ours teaches at the local primary school and she really likes it, but she travels up every day from the northern suburbs of Hobart.

Spring Hill is south of Oatlands and St. Peter's Pass north of it.

All these places, like Ross, Richmond, Campbell Town, Evandale, they are steeped in history with wonderful sandstone, colonial buildings.
