Hi all....I've just joined and would appreciate any advice on Hobart regarding good schools/area's to live etc. I've been offered a job at the Royal Hobart. My nursing registration is now sorted. I just need to have medical before getting 457 visa. Really excited about the whole adventure but secretly scared! I've been told that providing the medical goes ok, then me and my daughter will arrive beginning of May.

My daughter (who will be 12 when we arrive),is into swimming and I've already been in contact with the Hobart Aquatic Club. Does anyone have children who go there?

Also can anyone give me any info about childcare? Because I'll be doing shift work I've been thinking about having an au-pair. I've looked on a few websites but any personal reccomendations would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Tracey :cute:

Hi T George, and welcome to PIO. and a big welcome to our Apple Isle Tasmania. There are a fair few of us PIO'ers from Tasmania, albeit it I am in the north. Sunshine Smile has just arrived and I believe working at the Royal Hobart so she will be able to advise you there.... HappyLass and Skani as wel as a few others. If you go through Tasmanian threads there is quite a bit of information there for you. I am sure you will be very happy here. Susie x

Hi Tracey

I have sent you a private message.. I do believe we will seeing each other in May!!!

In the meantime, let me know what info you need and I will try to help. Im not much use with regards schools as my daughter (who came with me) is 18 so I havent needed to explore those. However some of the girls on the ward have children the same age as your daughter so I will ask tomorrow.. I would imagine its one of those situations where you decide where you want to live and then find the right local school?

There are certainly some areas that I would avoid and certainly lots of beautiful areas to live. We have just secured a rental, and I would suggest for now have a look on

www.realestate.com.au at the following areas,

Bellerive (gorgeous, near a beach and shopping centre, 5 mins from CBD)

Howrath (beyond Bellerive) Geilston Bay, Lindisfarne, Sandy Bay, Kingston.

These are the only areas I have looked at so far as we dont have transport until this weekend (hopefully).. anything you want to know, just ask!

Hi Tracey and Steph. I am also a nurse, currently in the UK but hoping to arrive in Tas July 2012 once son has finished GCSE's.

I already have a visa and registration with AHPRA. I hope to get a job in Royal Hobart as well, my speciality is oncology and palliative care. Is there still a demand for nurses as I have been reading the Tasmanian Mercury online which keeps talking about health cuts?

Tracey how is your 18yr old finding Tas? One of my concerns is that the children might outgrow Tas and move to the mainland for better career prospects. Could you also ask on you ward if anyone has expereince of schools for a 13yr old (think she will be entering year 7 or 8) and a 16yr old (think he will be entering yr10 or 11).

Many thanks

Vanessa

Hi Vanessa....I'm still in the UK at the mo....hopefully be leaving beginning of may. My daughter will be 12 when we arrive in Tas, so once I'm there, I'll be able to give you info on what I find about schools.

Are you using a recruitment agency? Try plexus medical.....that's who I've used and I'd recommend them. They've been great. Failing that, email the hospital direct. Good luck.... Trace xx

Hi Tracey,

Congratulations on getting the job! I haven't the foggiest when it comes to childcare or schools but with three cats at home - home is Howrah, I can recommend a Vet if you happen to need one of those. If you're planning to get online when you get here, Internode are your best bet for service and cost. They also offer a pretty good VOIP telephone service too so you don't have to use Telstra at all.

Best of luck with the flights and the new job!

Hi and thanks for that. Won't be needing a vet just yet!! My daughter's rabbit can't come out with us, so no doubt I'll end up buying one at some point. What is VOIP???? I did look on the Telstra site the other day. What I'd like is the whole package like we have here with sky - tv/internet and landline. Does internode do this??

Hi Tracey, Regarding a job I will try the hospital direct nearer the time. My daughter will be 12 on Friday so I expect our daughters will be in the same school years. Please do keep in touch as I shall love to know how you both settle. My daughter is horse mad so she is looking at riding schools around Hobart.

Have you been to Tassis before? We went for a reccie 2 years ago. It is a beautiful place, very slow laid back pace of life. I see you are currently in Cornwell so are used to beautiful coastline. Parts of Tassie reminded me of Devon and Cornwall.

Good luck with your move

Vanessa

Hi Vanessa....my daughter is 12 next month,so yep, they're in the same year. She's into swimming so I've looked at clubs and then emailed the Aquatic Centre in Hobart. I've had 2 emails from the head coach which is really impressive!

And no, I've never been to Oz let alone Tas. 3 and a half yrs ago I went to Canada with a view to moving there but I went to one of these health expos and changed my mind.

Will def keep in touch and let you know how things go with settling in etc.

Hi Happy Lass, thanks for that.I've just looked on that internode site and got myself confused! Will def look at the others. Not going to pay a fortune for the big name companies when others can offer the same. This voip, is it like skype? or is that something else entirely.

Have looked at mobile phones....but will get a pay as you go sim card initially.

I'm off to bed now....so have a good day xx

Aye, it's like SkyPE only you don't have to use the software. You just plug your phone into the socket and that's that.

Prices and plans do change quite a bit so if you find you can get Internode in the area you know you're going to be living, you are welcome to give me a shout if you're a bit stuck re. Internode. :) Basically you want a [reliable] ISP with a quota that offers enough to cover your needs at a reasonable price.

Sleep well.

My wife is in the same specialism as you and we've been to a Health Expo this weekend and the people manning the Tasmania stall have been very keen to get her signed up and out there. They were very positive about easily finding a suitable job.

Thanks. We're very early in our dream to move down under so there's a lot of things to do before that dream becomes a reality.

Seahorse....sorry for not replying yesterday. I went to a health expo about 18months in london. I went there knowing which country I was going to go to but when I left, I had changed my mind. Now it's all change again. I'm sure you'll reach your dreams if it's what you all want to do. I'm just amazed as to how quick it's taken so far.

Keep in touch and let us know how things go and if we can help at all with info etc. I wish I had found this site months ago!

Take Care

Hi Seahorse, Its encouraging to hear that your wife has received a positive response to her employment options. As we have the same specialism we may well end up working together in the future!!

Good luck with your plans and stay in touch
