Hi guys,

I am a teacher and will be leaving for Oz on 12th September. I am afraid I have had to jump through quite a few hoops in order to get my visa but it has been worth it!

Stage 1 - Skills assessment. I failed mine in August 2005. I spent 3 years at uni studying a BA in Primary Education. Aussie teachers spend 4 years at uni. I went back to uni part time for a year and got my Masters degree. I re-applied and passed the skills assessment with NOOSR in October 2006. NOOSR are no longer the skills assessment body, it is run by Teaching Australia (I think that's the name!)

Stage 2 - Visa application - this required the usual paper work for most visas, passports, birth certs, marriage certs, work evidence and qualifications etc. I am going on a skilled independent 136

Stage 3 - Registration as a teacher. Each state requires you to be registered before you can work as a teacher. I managed to obtain registration with Victoria last month so I can apply for work and/ or register as a supply teacher as soon as I arrive. This process costs money as well so be prepared!

If I can help in anyway then please feel free to pm me, I don't mind being bombarded - I wish there had been more teachers on here when I was first starting out!

Hi there,

We are a teacher and electrician too.

Not sure if you've started the visa process but when we visited our agent at the very beginning of the process we were advised to apply through my OH since electrcian is on the MODL list.

That meant he had to do all the paperwork for the TRA and I could skive a little!!:twitcy:

Unlike Felicity I could start the process at Stage 3 to register with Queensland Education Department. It's quite a straightforward form, though you do need to back it up with the usual paperwork and a current reference. I sent it away 6 weeks ago and although they have taken the fee from my bank account I've not received registration as yet.

Good Luck. I'm sure the people on this site will help you out as much as they did for us you'll get there.:notworthy:

Hi Col&Dee

Using my husband skill was something I considered. Have you worked through an agent? If so, how much did it cost (approx)? Can you recommend an agent?

Hi Colleen,

Yes we used an agent for the full visa process (though lots of people on this site have done it on their own successfully). There are lots of good agents recommended on the site, we used Overseas Emigration based in Edinburgh (lots of people from England used them too as all contact is through email and phone-calls). The agents costs were about £2800, The visa £800, TRA £160 & Medicals £300.

If you have a look on the website Overseas Emigration Visas - Overseas Emigration they now have an option to do a DIY Emigration which may suit you too.

Hope this helps,

Denise

Thanks for the information. I completed a 3 year BA business course then a 1 year PGCE course. I currently teach in a middle school and I specialise in Numeracy and PE, Im wondering if you used an agency or did you complete the forms etc yourselves? Do you know of any particularly helpful sites aimed for teachers looking to emigrate.

I'd be grateful when you relocate if you could post any tips etc

Many Thanks and enjoy the hols
