The technical rule is that you apply for a visa in a particular Class, not for the narrower subclass. The CO must consider your eligibility for all of the subclasses of visa within that particular Class. This is what made switching around possible for visa applications that were lodged before 1st July 2010. On 1st July 2010, DIAC changed the rules for applications made on or after 1st July 2010. However DIAC have been careful to stress that they have not imposed this change retrospectively. It does not apply to visa applications that were lodged prior to 1st July.
