Hi Guy's,

This is my first post so hello to everyone. I am currently in Australia on a working holiday visa. I have been working with an air con/heating company and been offered a full time position with them also sponsoring me. In the uk i completed an apprenticeship with british gas as a heating engineer. I am in the process of filling out my forms for the tra assesment. I was going to apply as a gas fitter but was wondering if anyone has the same experience as me and manged to get recognised as a general plumber? My qaulifications are the usuall for a heating engineer, acs, ccn1,etc i also have my unvented hot water certificate aswell.

Hope this makes sense to someone and any help would be much appreciated.

Chris

where in Oz are you?, its good that you moved into the air industry as gasfitters find it difficult to get work there unless plumber as well. i am pretty sure gas fitters are still on the in demand list so go for that, the ccn unvented etc doent mean much to oz but a good detailed account of the work you carried out ie used adjustable spanner to install cold supply pipes to boiler etc is what they look for. lotsa details of how you carried out work. include the details of connecting gas WATER pipes. in perth MPA are a good place to enquire. the gas exam was 3 hrs long and took me 23 minutes to complete, really simple. but uk certs dont mean much once passed the tra

Hi , im a plumber and heating eng in the uk got my permanent resident visa in 08 hope to be over soon.. we used an agent to get our visa and all they seemed bothered with is that i can do plumbing even though iv got all my gas etc.etc...

Its great to hear you been offered a job, as a friend of mine can't get a fast track visa as it is off the demand list, so if its what you want take the opportunity.....

If you don't mind me asking how did u get the job did you get it when you were in UK or in oz....?

I myself is looking for work but not sure where to head for... and told I need a plumbing licence when I get to oz...

Hope everything works out for you............... Tony

Hi, I also worked for British Gas back in the UK and completed an apprenticeship. I worked as a Heating Engineer too. I applied for a skilled migrant visa as a Gas Fitter which got granted back in 2008. I don't think you will be recognised as a general plumber out here, the qualifications from the British Gas apprenticeship are directed more towards Gas Fitting qualifications. You have done well to find a job and someone that will sponsor you, could I ask where you found work? As I have been here a year now and have been unsuccessful in finding work in this industry. I am currently in Queensland but am thinking of moving to wherever work is. Let me know if I can be of anymore help, I too have been through TRA procedure. Thanks, Robin

Hi Robin, thanks for your reply. Im living in the melbourne area, from what i understand there is more work down here for gas fitters than there is in queensland. I have been very fortunate with the job i have. Did you have to do a skills assesment?

Hi,

My boyfriend is a plumber/ gasfitter. We've been waiting for over three years for his visa to come through as he was advised to call himself a general plumber. He doesn't have a job to go to but if I were you i'd stick with gasfitter. If you look on the immi.gov website you'll see that general plumbers have been taken off the critical short list but gasfitters are still on there.

Do you know of any recruitment agencies out there who specialise in helping uk plumbers get jobs?

O r can you reccomend anything, we're desperate! And Mike's too old to get a one year working visa!

Hope that helps.

Sophie.

hi chris weve been here 3 years came over on a permanent skilled independent visa hubbie was a gas fitter and plumber in uk over 10 years exp corgi reg etc anyway on arriving he got his full gas license but only provisional plumber we couldn't afford the time or the money to take the courses required in qld to regain a full plumbers license he has permanent work under full gas licenses and he gets paid more for gas work so its just not worth the extra hassle reqd to gain full plumbing so he still has provisonal plumbing and full gas now 3 years later

hope this helps

Hi I couldn't help notice the problem all of you were in.... I have a idea that the majority of you should consider.

Now the TRA make it able for you to recognise your UK plumbing qualifications, basically you studied in the UK and you can simply transfer your qualifications with out hassle. If you have ccn1, ACS and all the rest like controls etc this is the best way forward for you but there is a simpler route. If you have worked as a plumber for 4 years in the UK, even if you were a gas engineer or something and can PROVE you worked as a general plumber for four years like I know most of you can then simply apply for your Australian trades persons plumbing license based on the experience you have and forget about your qualifications. If you can prove four years plumbing experience then you can apply for you trades license as a competent person.... the difference is;

- $210 fee rather than $2500

-No long wait to be assessed

-you can apply for sponsorship/PR as soon as you have got it

-When you have you basic plumbing license you can apply for GAS simply and easy

-Get work in a few weeks rather than months/years

One thing to consider the wages for a decent enough PLUMBER are the same as a simple GAS MAN in the UK so it will give you a good start to the way of Auss.

If any fellow plumbers have any questions post them here or IM me.

Hi guys and girls, Here in Melbourne you have to jump through alot of hoops now since jan 1st and dont let anyone tell you different and it dosnt matter what qualifications you have, Me and a few pommy freinds here are all in the same boat, we are working as you will be given some bits of registration after sitting a few exams but if you want your license forget it! you now have to sit more exams and a level 4 business course which im doing from home, Ive been a plumber gas engineer for 17yrs also worked for BG have certificates coming out of my ears and Im still jumping through hoops.

Hi all in qieensland you will have to retrain to get a full license, depending on how you want to do it it will take about 18 months, gas licenses are granted by the department of mines and energy and they will give you a full license if you have UK quilifications if you dont have your lpg acs then do it in the uk as there is a lot of lpg as soon as you head north of brisy. Every state is different and check with the plumbing board of the state you are going live in to see what they require you to do to gain a full license. best of luck.

Hi, My boyfriend and I are in the process of beginning the visa process. The problem is should he apply as a gas fitter or plumber? In the UK his job title is heating engineer and plumber. But the majority of his work is as a gas fitter. He hasn't done an appreticeship but trained on the job and has 10 years experience. He is GasSafe registered and has all the relevant City and Guilds certificates. My main question is should he apply as a gas fitter or plumber? Thanks.
