Hi,

My partner is a nanny and was wondering how she would go about becoming a classroom assistant in Melbourne?

If anyone has done this or knows anyone that has any advice or info I'd really appreciate it

cheers

Classroom assistants in Australia are not the para professionals that they are in UK. Most are just untrained people with a clean police check who happen to apply. Some do have Cert iii and iv in integration studies which means they are likely to work with more complex integrated special ed kids but that isnt mandatory.

It's a job in high demand from a whole cohort of mums who want school hours while their kids are little and so not easy to get into by any stretch of the imagination. Poorly paid, often the best way in is to do volunteer work in a school to get yourself known. Be prepared to wipe noses and tie shoe laces and help kids go to the loo and do lots of paper cutting and pasting.

I agree with Quoll.

Our town in WA has a huge list of TA available for supply work (but really want permanent work).

Also not sure its the same for Vic, but a lot of the TA are not on permanent contract. Usually 6month contract, so get fed up as every 6months they worry they will be out of a job.

One lady hubby worked with was marvellous but the last week of term was told a couple of kids had left school so she was not needed after the 2 week holiday.

This is WA, but Id seriously think twice about TA work. You would be better off getting a job in Childcare centre, this is in high demand due to baby boom (Mums here get $5000 at birth so this has boosted births).
