Help with Medicare, Living and Working in Geelong

Hi Everyone, First post, so please be gentle

For Info: I will be working in Geelong and my visa is Class BN Resident P Sub Class 136

I have just received a job offer and we now considering our options and need some help with the following

Medicare:

How much would I expect to pay for Medicare for a family of 3?? our son is 14. I have looked on the medicare web site, I've read about how good Medicare is but can't find what it costs??

Is the medicare payment deducted at source like NI is here in the UK or is like an insurance payment.

Dentist: My son had a full brace fitted around 6 months ago, this will need regular checks and work carried out for the next 18 months, I know no insurance will cover this, does anyone know what would expect to pay for this??

Living & Schooling:

My job will based in Geelong and I prepared to traval a 50 miles radius for the right school and rental/home, What I'm looking for is some honest and upfront comments and advice on the good areas for housing and schools and also the places to avoid.

Working:

My job offer is a 12 month contract position in Geelong, I've been contracting here in the UK for many years and have my own limited company for obvious tax & earning reasons. Can anyone advise the best person or company I can talk to about Oz taxation & PAYE to make sure I'm maximizing my earning potential, the agency who have offered me the position have advised there is no benefit in either hourly rate or tax reasons in setting up my own company on the simular bases of either a sole trader or Ltd company.

Getting about:

On arrival I intend to hire a car for a short period so I'm looking for a good cheap car rental company and also a recommended secondhand car dealer and what if any are the hidden costs into owning and running car in Victoria.

Please accept my apologies if the above questions have been asked before, I have searched the forum but can't the answers I'm looking for.

Any help will be much appreciated, thanks

Medicare is paid from salary as a percentage which is fixed. People on high wages pay extra 1 percent. If you are a business or sole owner whatever then you would pay it with your tax.

Teeth my son had orthodontic work from seven to fifteen and I guess it cost us about three or four thousand dollars at that time but we had insurance so it was not so expensive.

A lot of people like living in the small towns around Geelong mainly near the beach, Jan Juc, Torquay, Port Arlington etc.

Schools Geelong Grammar would be the top private school Prince Charles attended there many moons ago.

There are a lot of people who live that way and if you visit Britvics as well as this forum people already live around the area you are interested in.

Good luck.

As for tax being a contractor you would not be covered by work care you would have to take out your own insurance, you would not receive holiday pay and you would have to pay your own superannuation. Also they can pick you up and drop you at the drop of hat. Personally I would rather be employed and receive the benefits.

I thought the IR35 laws limited the benefit of having a Limited company unless multiple sources of income - or did the rules change again? Similar rules came in here around the same time. Some contractors use salary packaging companies instead like Salary packaging and contractor management - contractor insurances and lafha. For reference, Ltd companies are called Pty Ltd over here.

If you have travel insurance for the first few weeks in Australia it will often cover any excess you have to pay on car rental - this allows you to avoid the extra $20/30 per day you often have to pay to reduce the excess from a few thousand to a few hundred. Even getting a local travel insurance as a domestic tourist for $70/week is a lot cheaper than paying the $210/week excess reduction fees.

Thanks for your comments, I'm not sure we can afford Prince Charles type school fees are they others that are good and affordable............. I've been looking at the places you've mentioned and they look OK are there good schools in area either state or private??

I guess I should budget for around $3000 dollars for his orthodontic work.

Yes I know only to well the pit falls of contract work, but it does have it's rewards if you can get continuous contracts................. I didn't know about the additional insurances I guess I need to look into that.

Yes your right about IR35 and it depends if your contract is captured by IR35 or not. Thanks for the links

Hi,

we used the services of Go Matilda to get our visa who were excellent. Their managing director Alan Collett who owns the company and is a UK and australian certified accountant and specialises in helping expats etc with any tax issues. He lives in Geelong now.

We meet him recently and found him to be very helpful and his company offers a multitude of services. His email is alan.collett@gomatilda.com. Its worth contacting him to ask how he can help with your tax matters.

Good Luck!!
