Hi There,

We are in the process off going to tell the parents our plans to emigrate, ( when we are brave enough) does anyone know the process of parents retiring in oz and what the process is? Just so we can give them the option to come with us maybe at a later date,

Many thanks

Hi Kerry and Craig,

Good luck when you go to tell th eparents , mine were brilliant, in-laws hit the roof and are still making life difficult - but we'll get there !!

Anyway, essentially to get your parents to Oz there are mainly 2 types of Visa

The standard parents visa where they just pay the appliocation fee and then wait - but the wiat is approx. 10 years at present.

Or the contributory parent visa where they pay the visa app fee plus just before the visa's granted they have to pay approx. $32,000 each. This is as a contribution to the Oz economy and is a % of whaty the govt. expects it will cost them to have your parents there - healthcare etc. The wait for this type of visa is approx 18months to 2 years at present.

Have a look at this link on the CPV it gives you all the info

Contributory Parent (Migrant) Visa (Subclass 143)

Hope that helped a bit and good luck with everything,

Kirstyx

Hi Kerry + Craig,

The first thing is the balance of fmaily test. How many kids do Mum and Dad have and where are they living?

Oops forgot to put, they must also pass the balance of family test. They must have the majority of their children living in Australia as PR's to qualify.

You also need to be aware of the lack of financial support for new elderly migrants. They are expected to be self supporting for the first 10 years at least with no access to social security benefits (we have no age pension just aged social security payments). As their UK pensions will be frozen at the rate that they first take them, it can be financially quite challenging unless they have independent income from other sources. They can access medicare of course but will still be expected to pay for their prescriptions etc especially for the first two years but after that, if their income is low they may be able to get the Commonwealth Seniors Health card which would give them discounts on prescriptions.

Hi,

Others are giving you sound info on the visa process. Booklet 3 has everything and can be downloaded.

With respect, what you are eventually going to tell your parents - is better discussed ASAP.... so they can get their heads into it and become involved in what is...essentially a major life changing event.

This week has seen a number of posts from folks heading back to the UK.

Its the old problems, so far away and missing friends and family.

I have to say, what did they expect? Does that sound harsh?

Well the reverse of that is leaving aging parents behind, they have "lost" family.

Do they have computer knowledge and PC that they canuse web cams and such? NO, then why not get something done and train them in plenty of time??

Also be aware, the CPV - unless changed - will require "kidz" to be settled in Oz for 2 years before an application can be submitted...it then takes whatever the process duration is currently about 15 month I think. Albeit the minister is said to want that reducing to 12 months.

So, consider the cogs and wheels of the situation and they are - perhaps - better dealt with as a family.

End of Wet Blanket Mode.

Best wishes for a bright new life ...eventually downunder.

L.L.
