Junie
Don't you need to have a lot of money to apply for SS? Does it depend on the number in your family? There are me, Hubby and 3 children.
Les Mighalls
State sponsorship depends on your skills, not on the amount of money you have, for skiled migration. There are other visas where the amount of assets are relevant, though.
Guest Gollywobbler
Hi Junie Reading your earlier posts, Hubby is a Toolmaker and you have applied for an sc 175 visa in about September 2008. When everything changed in Dec/Jan, Toolmakers were on the original CSL. They were removed from the CSL on 16th March 2009. The fast, reliable link to all the State migration websites is below: State & Territory Migration Sites - australia.gov.au So far the only States which charge for considering sponsorship applications are NSW and the ACT. NSW is irrelevant because they do not sponsor Group 4 occupations for the sc 176 visa and Toolmaker is a Group 4 occupation. The ACT charge $275 for a sponsorship application to them. The ACT will not accept any more sc 176 sponsorship applications based on their current List after close of business later today, 30th June. They have decided to take a two month breather until 1st August. One 1st August they plan to publish a new List of occupations that they will consider ACT sponsorship for. Toolmaker is not on their current List. New migrants cannot claim income support type Benefits from Centrelink (social security) during their first two years in Australia. If the new sc 176 visa holders have a Family sponsor, their Sponsor undertakes that s/he will provide for the newbies personally if they fall on hard times within 2 years of arrival in Oz. The States do not make a similar promise. Without the financial cushion of family sponsorship if necessary, it would be irresponsible for a State not to ask how you plan to support yourselves in that State for at least 6 months post-arrival, during which time you will be getting settled but you might not be able to get work easily because you might not know anybody. There is a lot of mateship & word of mouth with finding work in Oz so it is not always easy when you are new, don't hear about what is going work wise and have no mates who could help. QLD hit the headlines last week because they suddenly started demanding proof of liquid funds in the bank, which has kiboshed a lot of people who are relying on the equity of their homes, which will be sold before they move to Oz. Whether QLD can be persuaded to take a less draconian stance remains to be seen. Beyond that, each State has its own rules about how strict they are about proving that you will be able to support yourselves initially so it is a matter of reading the websites for any State that you might be interested in moving to. They all vary in their estimates of how much money they think you will need, too. Cheers Gill
Junie
Oh well, we'll just stick with the 175MODL application. Not too long now and they would have had it for a year! Have left medicals until they are requested as I have heard that the date foractivation of the Visas is usually 12 months from the date of the meds or police checks. Does anyone have confirmation of this? Junie :notworthy::wacko:
