Don't know about SA but here in Queensland loads of kids ride to school. Need a helmet though as the police will fine you if not wearing one. Personally I would buy one in Oz as they are cheap and the kids seem to know what is the 'in' bike. Lots of teenagers ride around on bikes which seem far too small for them but thats the 'in' thing here! Good luck.

Hi there!

My son and his mates seem to go through phases of riding their bikes a lot...then not at all...but they all have them.

It seems to me that, proportionally, a lot more kids rode their bikes to school when they were at primary school, and then used to go for a ride after. There are a lot of reserves, which are not terribly big but link roads...so kids can cut through safely and hardly (if at all, depending where they live of course!) need to cross a road.

It's a bit different when they get to high school. Although many kids will the school in their catchment area, you also get a huge amount of children who need to catch a bus to school - might be they've chosen the school for a specialist programme, or just gone private.

Both schools my kids have attended have offered proper bike racks. The primary put theirs in an area which was out of bounds during recess and lucnch, whilst the high school has the bikes in a fenced area which is locked during the day.

As for buying here or there, bikes can range from cheapo K-Mart ones to more expensive bike-shop ones depending on need. There are a lot of BMX tracks around so if your kids are into BMX-ing, there are a fair few clubs and some really nice bikes that you can choose according to what you want to be able to do!

Oh and if you buy here, you won't have to wait until your container arrives!
