I havent got my VISA yet and my employer wants me ASAP!!

Hi

I have a job offer in Sydney and my new employer is going to be sponsoring me for 4 years. The VISA was lodged 3 weeks, but I aint heard anything yet... my employers told me it would take about 2-3 weeks to be processed.

Im really worried cos I have handed in my notice and my last day at work is Friday. I had to hand in my notice as my new employer wants me to start working ASAP.

Can anyone else tell me how long they have had to wait for sponsorship?

Also who is the best airline to fly with (i aint even booked my flights as I dont have my VISA!)

Hi Rico- lucky you where in Sydney are you going to?

I am in a similar situation. I received a job offer from Oz in August, I had only been in my current job here in uk for a month, so I told them a move was likely as soon as I knew, as I wanted to be up-front and thought that seeing as I was still in my 3 month probation period it was a good time to go before I got too settled. We were told the whole application can be processed in 4-6 wks, if all parties put in the application at the same time. The company sponsoring us put their application in about 7/8 weeks ago and we have just heard today that they have been approved (yipee) apparently we should receive our business visa any day now. Your application may be quicker if your company have sponsored before, so try to find that out. My current job have been very good and let me continue working despite my 3 month probation now being over, however, I only have another 2 weeks before they decide to start looking for a replacement- am not prepared to loose my job in case the visa doesn't come through (although have been told that this is highly unlikely) so if it doesn't come very soon we won't be going...

I hope this kind of helps your situation. My future employer wants us to be there before Christmas, however I have said that this is highly unlikely. It is a huge decision so put your foot down a little bit with them- I don't think things should be rushed too much and if they want you enough to sponsor you they should be prepared to wait. Maybe chat to your bosses here and let them know that you haven't got your visa yet, they may let you stay on until you are ready-honesty is the best policy.

Good luck.

thanks for the reply. The company I will be working for have got loads of Brits working over there. Apparently more than 50% of their staff are from there!

I have been in constant contact with my manager over there and he said that they have never had a rejection...so fingers crossed!

I know I prob shouldnt have finished up at work, but I had to in order to start with them ASAP

I'm sure in that case you'll be fine. I was going to do the same thing so totally understand just didn't have the bottle to hand in my notice without being sure about the visa. Well done you, I wish I'd done things your way instead of dragging them out so much.

Hi Rico

Fellow Glasgae lass here although it's been a while ;o)

I quit today, I haven't even applied for my visa (they say 4 weeks, DIMIA says 8 weeks), booked our flights yesterday and planning to leave on 2nd Jan. I had to quit as they want a reference as part of my application forms. Planning on getting the forms submitted by the end of the week all being well.

My contact (HR) over there has complete 3-4 applications since January and it takes around 4 weeks. (They are based in Sydney and have brought people over from UK and other countries).

Hang in there, I've taken the leap of faith (resigning)and glad I did as I hate keeping secrets and want to tell everyone now. We're flying with Malaysian (34" legroom compared with 30" Qantas/BA), and it's £760 leaving on 2/1/06. Offer valid till 30th November but flights are getting booked up and you can't cancel the date you fly out.

Best of luck

Hi Pj

Glad to hear someone else is the same boat. My problem is that I need to fly over there very soon, and I wont have much time between getting confirmation of my VISA and flying over.

Basically I could hear about my VISA tommorow, book my flights on Thursday and be flying over next week... this is because my new employer need me to start ASAP.

My main concern is however that I dont get it and then, I will be out of a job (I finished up work last Friday)

Rico, I sympathise.

My new bosses wanted me in November and I wanted March so we compromised with Mid-Jan. This is a huge move and they have to give you time to get yourself sorted. What difference will a couple of weeks make anyway?

Apparently recruitment is dead in December due to summer/xmas holidays so I wouldn't let them pressure you too much. Take your time, if they want you, they'll wait. If they won't wait, there will be other companies gagging to take you on. I can put you in touch with an agency specialising in rec-2-rec UK to Oz.

However, getting a flight could be a challenge if it runs into beginning of December. The flights jump from £700 to £100 after 9/10th December, so a lot of people fly before they go up.

Hang in there, I know it's scarey, but it'll all fall into place.

hi

the main problem is that I got offered the job about 3 months ago. I wasnt 100%, but didnt let my new employers know this. I took time getting all my forms back, basically cos I didnt bother, but they thought it was because I couldnt get access to a computer!

They wanted me to start in October, and they still want me ASAP. I had to hand in my notice, as my current boss wants me to work a months notice. If I had waited till i got confirmation of the VISA this would have delayed my start date even more!

... but what the hell

you only live once right!!!

Hi there, just a quick question what site did you use to find the company that want to sponsor you? I've looked at a few and have found it quite hard to find any plastering work. I'm hoping to move out there by October if that is a possibility? As I have a girlfriend out there already.
