What would you love to see in Oz?

I'm wracking my brains to think what the best type of business would be to start when I'm settled in Melbourne.

Never having been to Oz before, and having heard that Oz is years behind the UK, much like the UK is behind the US, I'm unsure of exactly what it is that Oz is lacking in.

So who better to ask than folk that have made the move, or have been frequent visitors.

I know you all mostly love Oz, but is there anything that you really wish that they had?

Be it proper batter, and vinegar for your fish and chips, to window cleaning or mobile car valeting.

If you've ever thought " I should start up a .............., it would take off here", then please share it.

Who knows, if I make it big, you could be in with a shout for a directorship:daydreaming:

Cheers,

Alan

PS Do you have mobile phones yet? Or fast food?

How about a proper fish and chip shop that sells mushy peas and steak puddings?

A British restaurant - Real Lancashire hotpot, haggis and swede, kippers (love em), and all the desserts, underated stuff. :jiggy:

Anything with low overheads, party plan for Brit women so they can meet one another and feel more settled. The men seem to settle easily its the wives and partners who often struggle because they are looking after the children with no extended family support and its very very hard for them. The men go to work meet up with other chaps etc etc.

Not just Brit women most migrant women are the ones who are homesick and unhappy.

Post migration depression a bit like post natal depression I think and my mums went on and on and on.

Won't work if previous experience is a guide, back in the early 90's Harry Ramsden's,the UK company allowed the name to be franchised, with plans to open a whole chain of shops in Australia.

The first one opened in Burwood East but never really took off in Australia,I don't know whether the first shop is still going but it doen't seem that Australians are interested in UK style fish and chip's.

I had a conversation some years ago with pamela Ferguson after she had put an ad for her pastiest on 3AW she said Cornish miners had a pasty for their lunch whilst working down the coal mines, not tin mines. they still have it wrong calling it a tiddly oggie! Just as wrong is the pasty with minced meat {wrong** no turnip etc. Sorry nothing like a Cornish pasty. I have had only one decent one in OZ!

Youre absolutely right, seen it first hand with Mummy.

I dont know how she stayed sane (actually she didnt) but she used to read a lot. Maybe you ladies need your own gang - you could all get tatts and have a clubhouse with a secret knock.....:biglaugh:

Yes Im being silly but in London when I was young my Mum and her sisters used to go to the Irish club at the community centre and socialise, drink, gamble, hold events and generally look out for each other. Its a good idea and VERY necessary.

0405 delboy feelin a group hug coming on..........awww......

Ok, food seems to be an issue then.

Re Party Plan. I take it Ann Summers and Tupperware aren't on the go?

I have been contemplating the chippie option, and I realise that the Aussies would probably steer clear, but surely there's enough brits that want a wee reminder now and then to keep it going?

I think the best bet would be to open a carry out chippie before getting any bigger ideas about sit ins, and offering all the home favourites. if the chippie can't work on it's own then the sit in probably won't either.

Any other thoughts? Any services that they don't offer, that we do in the UK?

We've had Tupperware parties for at least 20 odd years, same as lingerie (though not necessarily Ann Summers) parties, perfume parties, kids clothes parties etc. Dunno if it's the same in the UK, but generally the only reason people go is because they feel bad for their friend hosting it, and then won't buy anything at the end, or if they do, will just be something small - again because they feel bad for the friend hosting it!

Food is only an issue for the Brits who want it to taste the same as it does back home, myself as an Aussie much prefer the taste of Australian Fish & Chips & Curries! So I spose you'd need to look at the percentage of Brits in Melbourne (think it's about 5%) and where they are to see if it would be profitable. Loads more juice bars, sushi bars etc in Aus than in UK. You could look at getting a franchise, like Boost Juice Bars or something?

I really don't understand the concept that Australia is behind the UK, when I came over to the UK I thought that it was behind Australia!

I think there was a little bit of sarcasm there..

But seriously ,reading through all the threads on PIO about how far behind the UK Australia is and everybody craves all the things they left behind in the UK,it makes me wonder why they would bother coming here in the first place,,I'm not saying that there isn't a place for UK ideas and businesses in Australia, far from it,in fact I welcome any sort of idea that can help the Australian economy and provide investment and jobs, both for born and bred aussies and new migrants, but what I want to see is not ideas transported from the UK ,goodness knows Australia has had enough "transportation" from the UK over the past 200 odd years, but what I want to see are fresh,Australian ideas and fresh jobs for Aussies-old and new. It's really not that hard,I started a local business 6 years ago from home, offering an in home travel agent service where I went to peoples homes with travel brochures and using a laptop booked holidays for them, after six months I had so many clients I had to rent an office,I now run a full agency from the shop and still offer in home service and I employ 3 people.and look at the people on PIO,who have started businesses to bring in some money when things were tough, some of them are struggling I'm sure, but they are hanging in there and not giving up,that's the spirit of Australia and ,I think, the UK.

BTW When I said "australian ideas" I didn't mean ideas from only Australians,I meant Australian ideas as in ideas for Australia, from Australia, not the UK.

Please tell me youre not really such a party-pooper.

Ok then, no, had never heard of mobile phones before I got to the UK, was shocked to see you can actually make phone calls from something that doesn't have a cord?! Who would have thought!

The other thing that spun me out when I got here was that you can get TV in COLOUR!!! What a brilliant concept, I do hope they bring that out to Oz soon.

Can i say i would love to see US in Oz lol :)

no seriously I am probably different as in my opinion, when we get there i am not looking for anything specific to be the same as the UK, i intend to embrace whatever there is in the locality we settle down in.

Even if you move to another area in the UK there are vast differences in most things, i dont think i will miss a particular shop, ie music, clothes etc as there will be shops providing the same sort of things,

as far as food, well i love thai food, if there isnt an abundance of thai restaurants nearby then ill make my own :)

im sure someone will prove me wrong and mention something i will miss, but apart from this the only thing i will miss is watching my favourite rugby team playing live or on tv. Hopefully the internet will help me on that issue.

Jeez, next you'll be telling me they have the internet in Oz too:err: I was joking btw!

I'm not wanting this to turn into a "what do you miss thread" really, just looking for some inspiration. I will be starting a business, I just need to figure out which type.

I am ready to fully embrace Oz and it's culture, and I can't see myself missing the UK all that much, but it would certainly give me an extra boost if I bring over something that has not been tried in Oz. Something that preferably all residents will want to use, not just the Brits.

The Chippy idea will be a niche market, although it could broaden it's appeal with the right food selection and marketing.

Well done on the travel agency idea, that's the kind of thing I'm talking about. As far as I know agents don't come out to your house in the UK, so that idea could be brought over to the UK!!

If i had money to do so i would start a business selling new and used landrover 90's,

also would take care of the spare parts and fitting.

From what i can see you can only get 110's from landrover dealers and there is not only a bigger need for good off road vehicles in Oz but there are a lot of fans out there that are crying out for these 4wd's

Sorry, that's what I get for going online before waking up completely!!

You'll find there are loads of Chippies in Aus, but we have lots of Chicken & Chips places, as well as Fish & Chips. If you want really good chips, with lots of chicken salt, then we'll usually go get Chicken & Chips.

I wish I could think of something, being an Aussie in Uk I know there must be something I've come across and thought 'wow, that's something we need at home' but all I can come up with at the moment is the fact you can buy alcohol in Off Licences!!

Will keep the thinking hat on......

One thing I have noticed is that baby/children clothes is VERY expensive here. If you could get a franchise for NEXT or H&M you'd be laughing! Not sure they do that though, but that's the sort of thing I'd look into. Just a thought - keep us updated :spinny:
