Project Management in Oz

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am in the process of applying for Visa 176 - State Sponsorship to ACT. I am an Application Packager, but as I haven't seen any Packaging jobs in Canberra, I am looking to retrain.

Do PM role's in Oz look for Prince2 quals? Or would I be better off studying something else?

Thanks,

Mike.

Prince 2, that rings a bell.

You're in a different industry to me, I'm in Facilities but not so trade/tech based as they seem to like in Australia.

Have only just started checking into professional PM quallies in Oz, try Googling APM (Association of Project Managers I think, maybe there's a steer in there somewhere.

Otherwise there are Job agencies who specialise in "PM", try this one as a start:

Hi Mike

A number of organisations are adopting Prince 2 as their PM standard, but it's by no means the "de facto" standard it apparently is in the UK. The US "equivalent" PMBOK also has a foothold, and local chapters of the US PMI offer PMP accreditation courses based on PMBOK. Not sure about a Prince 2 equivalent.

In general, I would say that employers look for practical PM experience using a methodology, with formal accreditation "desirable" or "highly regarded". Have a look on seek.com.au to get an idea.

Re your current specialisation, you may find more opportunities in Sydney or Melbourne, if they are options for you.

Good luck

Chris

Thanks for your replies. Good advice and good links. I am only able to go on a state sponsrship to ACT, so Sydney and Melbourne out of the equation - for the first 2 years anyhow. Will try and get some PM experience in the UK before I get to OZ. Going to be tough though because it seems it's what every other IT person in the UK wants to get into.

Whilst i dont have prince2 i worked as a pm for a very large engineering company for the last 5 years, i have been told i could only qualify as a project administrator or project assistant unless i had 10 yrs + experience :(

Good luck, having prince2 can only help.

You need Prince II or PMBok.

I warn you the industry is very tight here at the moment and there are not that many jobs I am in the industry and am finding it hard here right now. I think you would be better off looking for application packager jobs because your experience will help you in securing work. Just getting a certification is not enough you need work experience in Management especially now in the recession it is very competitive.
