nicholiverpool
Hi, could any please advise of to what this job is in australia? My other half has worked in England as a care assistant for 3 years and is at Level 4. The description on the goverment site virtually describes what she does but the word "officer" makes us wonder. Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks, Karl & Kristin Nicholson.

olly
thankyou xxx Hi there, The term residential care officer or worker (RCW) is a term which is actually changing to Disability Support Worker, in some part due to the fact that the word 'care' appeared as some to be based on a 'medical' model rather than a welfare 'support' model for people with a disability who lived in a shared home with others. These Community Residential Units (CRU's) are run by the various Department of Human and Family Services in each State, or a non government organisation (NGO). Some of the NGO's are run by the churches (Salvation Army, Anglicare etc). Many of the clients in these CRU's are very capable and only need assistance from Support Workers rather than 'care' in the sense of a 'medical' model. Other people with perhaps more complex care needs may actually need a Personal Care Attendance (PCA). Sometimes of course PCA/DSW duties are overlapped, but not always. In my organisation we had several Division 2 Nurses as well. The PCA qualification is minimum of Certificate III at TAFE. For DSW it is CERT IV at TAFE (Technical and Further Education College). Div 2 Nursing is Certificate IV Health Nursing, this allows you to work in Aged Care homes as well, clinics and the like. The DSW positions are not well paid unless you get the penalties at weekends like I did. They do offer flexibility though. There are several agency which do casual 'bank' work and they pay better casual rates etc. Google 'Melbourne Specialist Support Agency' (MSSA) for some more details. Also look at the TAFE websites for info in each State. Hope this helps. cheers Olly
nicholiverpool
Thanks alot for the reply. My other half is currently working in an aged care home here and has the equivilent of a cert IV but in english qualifications. Do you think she would fall into the 'residential care officer' role to apply for permanent residency using this career path? Thanks Karl & Kristin Nicholson
olly
I guess you could try that category. As I am a local I am not sure of immigration requirements so to speak, but if you are qualified to do aged care personal care work you can probably get it recognised here in OZ. If you can get out here you can 'update' your qualifications I would think too to meet requirements. Not sure if there is a shortage of residential workers or not??? You would know that better than me. Good luck with it.
