PR in Canberra and Tasmania

Hi all,

My wife and two daughters are just starting the process of VISA application to move down to Australia and we've been told our only option is likely to be a state sponsored visa to ACT or Tasmania.

To be honest we hadn't really considered either, but I love what I am hearing about Canberra and so it might be a nice option.

However I work in PR and have done for over 15 years, so I am a little concerned about career prospects in the city. I know it is largely Govt dominated in Canberra for careers so I wondered if anyone had any knowledge of what the opportunities were like for PR in the City?

Thanks,

Dom

Hi Dom and welcome to PIO!!!!!

I am afraid I am not in Canberra yet, so can't help you. I am sure somebody will be along later who can!

Have you had a look on the job websites to get an idea?

www.seek.com.au

www.jobserve.com.au

www.mycareer.com.au

www.jobsearch.gov.au

www.linkme.com.au

These are just a few of the sites, and they have a huge variety of jobs on them!

Good Luck!

Hi Dom,

Welcome to PIO...

Yay another family looking to move to Canberra (maybe) ... Sorry I can't help with the job front but I have been doing alot of research on Canberra as it's a state i haven't visited in Australia! Looks lovely and strangely a bit like the UK without the really cold horrible weather!

My dad had the same concerns re: jobs in a government based state and has done alot of research so when he's back from his business trip ill get him to log in and post his thoughts!

Sorry, dont really know about PR jobs here but I would think you would have more chance in ACT than Tas. The biggest employer in town is the public service followed closely by the ACT public service and generally eligibility for citizenship is a criteria of employment for those two. However there are lots of sort of hanger on type employers who are here because the feds are here and there may be opportunities there - cant say that I would have thought it an occupation we would have been short of but it isnt my area at all. That said, our organization had a PR/Fund raiser/organizer position a little while ago and I dont think we got too many takers for it so the chap who was to have retired decided not to.

Guest cabbagesahoy!

I imagine there will be more PR job opportunities in Canberra than Hobart.

Both cities are great though - so you can't go wrong!

Thanks for all the encouragement. Looking at some of the Govt jobs, they say they are only open to Australian citizens - does that mean that people with a new Visa are not accepted?

Basically yes, the criteria usually states Australian citizen or eligibility for citizenship. I think you need to be looking outside the govt system - both federal and local.

If you move out on a State Sponsored Skills Visa are you allowed to another job other than the one you were sponsored for? My initial research of PR in ACT is showing limited opportunities for jobs outside of Govt which I cannot get as a non-Aussie citizen, but there might be more if I could move into a wider marketing role, but where would that leave me if I went on a PR Visa!

Lived in Canberra nearly 6 years. Working for govt requires citizenship although I'm told there are loopholes. There are PR, marketing and ad agencies in Canberra (mainly for govt clients) and you could try working for yourself (mainly for govt clients) there's work out there I'm told.

I've done media relations jobs for both unis in town - don't require citizenship.

These people might be able to help

The Public Affairs Recruitment Company

they're Canberra based and specialise in recruitment for comms jobs
