Hi!

We are heading out to Melbourne next month to have our visas validated. We have been planning this move for so long that we have not really had a family holiday before so we want to make the most of this one!!

What should we do? We are staying in the city for a week and then hiring a motorhome for a week.

I would suggest the new Southern Star wheel in the docklands, very similar to your London Eye!

Melbourne Aquarium, Melbourne Museum (also has a circus running currently), Luna Park are fun things to do in Melbourne, there's always festivals and events on too, so check the tourism site often :)

When you get your visa (ours is a perm. residence one, not sure about others) you have to physically be in Australia within about 9 months. We hoped to have our house sold etc and be living there within that time but then the credit crunch all kicked off and we couldn't sell our house so we can go, get our visas validated and then come back and hope people start buying houses again!!!

Buy a rash vest and spf 30 sunscreen and find a beach to play on. Day trip out to Ballarat to see the Gold Rush village of Sovereign Hill. Boat trip up and down the Yarra to see the ships at one end and the city at the other. Melbourne Zoo is OK too.

A good place to visit is Wildlife Wonderland on the Bass coast, although it is not in the same league as Melbourne Zoo they allow a more personal hands on experience of Australian Native Animals, you can hand feed the kangaroos and have a cuddle with a baby wombat.

Another couple of places are:

Eureka Tower - Eureka Skydeck 88

Philip Island - To see the penguins, seals, koalas etc - Phillip Island Nature Parks

Grants Picnic Area - You can hand feed the wild parrots, cockatoos, gallahs, rosellas, australian parrots: Grants on Sherbrooke - Souvenirs and Licensed Cafe

My children like the science works musuem: Scienceworks

Swim with Dolphins - Moonraker Dolphin Swims - Port Phillip bay Victoria Australia

Puffing Billy Steam Train - Puffing Billy Railway - Australia's Favourite Steam Train

There is lots more and like Quoll says the kids just love the beach, you can take a picnic or use one of the free BBQ's it is a great day out and doesn't cost a thing.

  • 2 weeks later...

We recently visited melbourne with a 6 year old and a 3 year old.........once you get over the flight!!! Our children loved the melbourne museum, Melbourne zoo, Puffing billy and wildlife park also Souverign hill was great. Seeing the penguins was lovely but they have to stay up late for that one.

The beaches were of course a hit and a cheap option. Good luck on the flight!!

Down at St Kilda on a Sunday they fly kites on the green next to the sea. Near Luna Park.

The Collingwood children's farm is great. Very hands on and good for little ones.

www.farm.org.au It's at the end of St Heliers Street in Abbotsford Vic 3067 (next to Collingwood, about 5km from the CBD.

Ceres community environment park, at East Brunswick, also inner city, is also good. www.ceres.org.au

The Botanic Gardens, on the south bank of the Yarra are a good place to have a family picnic, feed the ducks and swans etc. No squirrels, but beautiful.

My children used to enjoy going to Planet Play, - the one we went to was in the north eastern suburbs, www.planetplay.com.au, out at Wantirna, but they thought it was the bees knees.
