However, in Australia as in the UK, you cannot make a direct appointment even privately with a specialist. You have to be referred by a GP. I would suggest that you register with Medicare and soon as you arrive in Oz, but see a private GP if that will be quicker.

 

I would also suggest that you take out full medical & travel insurance before you leave the UK, just in case the flight leaves you feeling unwell or anything.

 

You could also try ringing or e-mailing Medicare from here. They may be able to give you some tips about how to fast-track getting a GP involved and the necessary referral:

We went to register with medicare within our first week, but was told we had to be in the country 10 working days before we could register in order for the DIMIA computer to send them the info. Don't know if this is just WA or all of Aus. Hence a second trip!
