restfamily
Hi I am moving to Canberra 6 months pregnant and need to line up a private obsterian before I go as by the time I get there it will be 3 weeks since I saw a midwife here. Any ideas how I go about this? We are off to Canberra. Thanks
Guest Gollywobbler
Hi Try hereL http://www.ranzcog.edu.au/find/search.php?state=ACT&type=fellow and http://bellybelly.com.au/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=27 However, in Australia as in the UK, you cannot make a direct appointment even privately with a specialist. You have to be referred by a GP. I would suggest that you register with Medicare and soon as you arrive in Oz, but see a private GP if that will be quicker. I would also suggest that you take out full medical & travel insurance before you leave the UK, just in case the flight leaves you feeling unwell or anything. You could also try ringing or e-mailing Medicare from here. They may be able to give you some tips about how to fast-track getting a GP involved and the necessary referral: http://www.medicareaustralia.gov.au/corporate/contact_us.shtml#general Hope this helps a bit
ali
We went to register with medicare within our first week, but was told we had to be in the country 10 working days before we could register in order for the DIMIA computer to send them the info. Don't know if this is just WA or all of Aus. Hence a second trip! Ali

restfamily
Okay. I have mailed medicare to ask if they can speed up the registering and getting an appointment with midwife / OB. Joined the forum and have posted so lets hope I get a good recommendation from another mum. Thanks loads on this one
