Was just wondering if you could give me any tips or advice. I take it you are gonna be assesed on your work? Are there any other tests and what do they involve? also do you know what you have to do in the practical. I am just beginning rearlly but am wondering how long before i could think of applying. We're from Birmingham Dave and i know what you mean about getting practical out of the way. All hinges on the practical really and until it's done we can't progress. We travelled aus in 2003-2004 and although we didn't go to Western Aus we liked Brisbane the best (Melbourne a very close second) and it's location is good for getting to the sunshine and gold coasts. As a city Melbourne is imho the best city in Aus but the "four seasons in a day" tag and colder climate has driven us to choosing Brisbane. I've only looked briefly at registrations and licences but i've heard that the money is poor until your fully registered. Licence/rego different in each state also. Where are you thinking of going? Hi Adam, To migrate as a general plumber you'll need experience under your belt although your doing the right thing obtaining info early. My suggestion would be to contact an agent, one that will give you a free over the phone consultation. If your financially and physically ready to go now, i think you may struggle to complete a "Trade Evidence Form" on which you list what you've done, when you did it, who for, how often etc. The form has specific elements that you need to have had experience of to be able to progress to a practical assesment. I have 15years experience in the plumbing industry and i was assessed at having a higher risk of not passing the practical, cheeky buggers !! (hope their not right). There are elements on the form that 90% of uk general plumbers won't do and elements that we'd class as a specialist areas of the trade over here in the uk. I'd definately contact an agent as there may be an easier option for you to migrate (eg using partners skills) Have you done an online points test yet? Vetassess practical/written If you using an agent then their sources of information can be invaluable. My agent has written templates of how to format your evidence. I can compare it to plumbing NVQ portfolio work, whereby you have to produce a comprehensive look at you work history. If you can get refrences all the better. I know this can be hard especially if you served your apprenticeship over 27 years ago. If self employed and have regular clientel then obtain references from them. I started the doccumentation from my apprenticeship, broke it down into each year stating what skills I'd learnt, what tools I'd used and what rate of pay I'd achieved. This way you can show progression within the trade. If you've been on any large contracts then make sure you mention where and when it was and what you did there. If you can't get references to support your evidence then you'll have to get statutary declarations done by a solicitor, these cost around £10-£15 per item Did the Vetassess practical in Accrington this Tuesday, the practical is split into three sections. Gas, water and soil/waste. Gas comprised of installation of 3/4 mild steel pipework connected on to 22mm copper. You have a work sheet to follow various dimmensions and lengths, the pipework has to be then tested out using manometer with assessor present. Water section is to couple 22mm copper to pushfit connection with 15mm branches. Other jointing method is brazing on a 22x22x15 branch tee and on a swaged coupling, then test out again with assessor present. Soil/waste is connection of w/c pan and couple up waste pipework to unvented soil stack. It would be wise to acquire latest tool list from Vetassess, as I took a lot of kit and only used a small amount. Accrington college is very well equiped and the workshop technicians are very helpful with anything you should need. the bays that you work in are clean and all fittings that are required for the assessment are present. So there's no need to be scratting around looking for tools and fittings. I took the Gas option so don't know what is entailed in the roofing option. Would suggest that a hand bender is required. There's a Rigid pipe threader/cutter at the assessment centre so no need to take stocks and dye set as I did!!! In between each section there is a technical interview, the questions can be quite in depth but shouldn't be too hard for a competant plumber. Hope this helps anyone out there, it's a daunting process at first, i can highly reccomend the Visa Bureau, they have been very helpful The practical isn't very hard!!!!
