Like Shaun I find Perth very laid back, which some hate and some love. For us, it was what we were looking for. We visited Brisbane which we thought was lovely (my brother lives there), but in our hearts and minds it just didn't do it for us - so we came to Perth - unseen saying if we didn't like it we'd move on.

Can you visit before you decide?

Blowers, can i make a suggestion? Why dont u put up a list of things that you are specifically wanting to know and we can answer them in relation to both cities. Then you will get a good fair view!

I have to agree with Johatts. But for an overview - Brisbane and especially the Gold Coast, felt very much like somewhere you go for holiday, not to live. Perth is very much for living and raising a family whilst still feeling just a teeny bit like you're on holiday every day.

What is the weather like between the two? We're very tempted with Perth, but not sure we could stand the hot temps. It was 28 the other day in London, but very sticky with it, and I just couldn't imagine living in that sort of heat for most of the year. Also what does each place have to offer teenagers?

Brisbane and that side of the country in general going North is sub-tropical to tropical when you get nearer Cairns. So it's humid and hot. Perth is very like California or Spain, it's a Mediterranean climate so although it does get hot - some days very hot - it is not humid at all. In fact it's very, very dry. So dry that there are open flame bans from October through March and there are restrictions on how often you can water your lawn and so on. Humidity is not a problem in Perth :-)

As far as teenagers are concerned, I'm not sure about Brisbane but I would imagine it's very like Perth in that there are beaches so tons of surfing, swimming, outdoor activities and sports.

I liked this post because it's of interest to me both from the past and for the future. The first place we landed and visited was Perth. It took 2 attempts by the pilot to get the plane down because it was a bit windy, but that was a whole load of fun, just seeing my Mrs face :biglaugh:as the plane went back up. As quick as I can sum it up, here goes,

Perth is the city that sold Australia to us fantastic city, lovely feeling there and it was Australia day the atmosphere was fantastic and even emotional. Lovely suburbs, Cottesloe, Mossman Park, very nice but mega bucks. Kings Park was a beautiful area and the beaches close to Perth are great. But we eventually settled on Brisbane which is equally as nice, great City area and atmosphere and everything close by, for example, beaches, natural scenes and feeling - Sunshine Coast, Theme parks and tourist resorts - Gold Coast, if you have kids I doubt you will find a better city to live. Where we live in the Western suburbs, we are close to the city yet in such a beautiful quiet place, it really is great.

Strange thing is, as with everything money dictates and the need to seek the best financial security is vital. We are currently working on a project which we feel will end up in us either staying in Brisbane or more likely moving to Perth in around 2 years time. It will be ironic if we end up in the first place we landed in Australia 3 years ago as 2 raw tourists with no idea what journey we would be embarking upon. It's been fun so far and who know's where it will end up.

Sorry if I rambled on, but in summary You have a choice of 2 great Cities to live, if you can't make up your mind toss a coin it always works for me.

Thanks for the replies. So what temps does it reach in Perth in the summer? Is it really unbearable or ok? I remember reading on PIO someone saying they weren't expecting to have to stay indoors so much (for the aircon) as it was just so hot outside for 5 months of the year (in Perth that is).

We have friends in Perth and they really want us to move over, however, I'm not sure how biased their comments are to us as they want us to move so much! It's nice to hear what others have to say. My cousin lives in Brisbane and is moving up to Townville, but she is much younger than us with no kids yet so after different things. Our children are 5 & 2 and I can see there's lots for young children in Perth, but not so sure about when they're older. I want them to be into more than just sports. I'm very much into wildlife and hiking etc, but not sure there's going to be that much for me there (as it in will take a long time to get to anywhere inland, away from the coast). It seems like the East coast has more to offer on that front, ie. hiking on the doorstep aswell as beaches). Have I got that completely wrong?

No your not wong, but don't go near Townsville, because now you are talking Hot. The further North you go the more tropical it becomes and the hotter and more humid. Maybe best to stick to the East, or South East Coast. I think East Cost has the most to offer, especially to families with children of the age you have. My reckoning and it's only my opinion based on my sort of research, Brisbane has the warmest temperatures of the big 5 cities, but perth is pretty close. I'm sure plenty on here can prove my thoughts wrong, so point noted. One thing which is great in Perth is the Freemantle Doctor, the onshore breeze that blows through on the hot days and is a big relief to people as it cools everyone down a lot. It really does exist and is the only doctor everyone is happy to see.

Another thing to consider is the isolation to some extent of Perth, generally regarded as one of the most isolated capitals in the World. Not a problem to many people, but realisticly even flying from Perth to another city within Australia iit's a wee bit more expensive and a longer flight. Perthites will argue why would you want to go anywhere else!! Sometimes when I think about this decision which may fall on us in the future, Brisbane or Perth, I console myself by saying "hey You could be choosing between Cardiff and Swansea, my home Cities, then I realise it's not a bad choice to have to make.!!

ooooh the weather-my big bone of contention ! Personally (and this comes with a disclaimer as it is MY personal opinion only !) we think the weather is far superior in Perth than Queensland (Sunshine Coast). The 'good' season here is supposed to be the dry season-winter. Well it is not dry-just drier than the wet ! Most of the days have been warm but very cold in the mornings and evenings.

In the next few months summer will be on its way here-which means LOTS of rain and VERY humid ! And I mean very humid. I love the heat and had no problems in Perth dry heat summers but the summer killed me in Queensland last year ! Give me a Perth summer any day over a QLD summer-and then the winter comes round again !! Aaarrrgggh !

But it is beautiful here !

P.S-Friends in Brisbane have had a lovely sunny day today and friends in Caloundra have had a warm dry day-so I think it is just our street, close to the mountains that has had rain !!

My OH and I very interested in this thread too. We're having the same dilemma - see the signature below!

We have visted the east coast a couple of times. I like Brisbane, and the Sunshine Coast. The Gold Coast was a bit too commercial for me, but then that might have just been the bits I saw. Did explore a little of the hinterland though, and that was lovely. I like the wildlife stuff, especially birding, and that was fantastic everywhere.

I think we both thought that we would end up somewhere Brisbane or Sunshine Coast way. But Darran has a friend in Perth who keeps telling us how wonderful it is. As we need to validate our visas (I can't go properly until next spring due to work commitments) we figured we would go and have a look at Perth and just see.

We can see advantages and disadvantages in both in terms of weather and in terms of how far Perth is from everywhere else (Darran is thinking of all these family and friends he's got coming to see us, and how much easier it will be for them to go up to Cairns or down to Sydney from somewhere near Brisbane). Darran's friend in Perth is in the same trade, and has a headstart, so being close to a) someone we know, and b) someone who has already done the things Darran is going to have to do, would make things so much easier too.

We could do without spending the money on a validation trip, but at least it is giving us the opportunity to go and see for ourselves. Problem is we will then have to make a decision, and I'm hopeless at making decisions!

Good luck with whatever you decide. We'll be watching this thread with interest. I'm guessing though we may come back with lots of questions of our own once we've been,

Cheryl

Hi,

We are in a bit of a dilema so hope someone can help. We have just arrived back from a reccie in Adelaide and Sydney with my 2 daughters aged 17 and 15. Adelaide is lovely but the girls were unsure. Sydney fantastic but its a bit pricey and busy to live. So now we are thinking that perhaps Perth or Brisbance would be better for us. Our 17 year old wants somewhere thats not too quiet, ie. a few pubs around etc but we dont want to live somewhere thats too busy (i.e. like centre of Sydney). Where is the best place to go for teenagers? Both our girls like Oz but are a bit reluctant and we are both really keen on moving so any info will be much appreciated.

Julie, Steve, Beckie and Mel.
