Hi, can anyone please give us some idea of areas to live in Brisbane. We are in the early stages of doing our 175 visa. We have two childreen 1 and 3 and are heading for Brisbane. Wanting a better life for us all and look forward to a out door life. Would need to be quite close to the city prob max 30 mins drive. Good schooling and things to do for kids and maybe near the coast.

Also what does the gold and sunshine coast offer?

Hi ,i guess it depends what you as a family want ,theres lots of family friendly suburbs within 30 mins of the city, you will also notice the prices for renting and buying are slightly cheaper if your just outside the city too.

Gold Coast is an action packed paradise with the hussle and bustle of surfers paradise, all the theme parks and the peace and tranquility of the hinterland, the gold caost seems to have something for everyone. Sunshine coast is a little more relaxed, lovely beaches and beautiful scenery but not much action for hyper kids and teenagers, lol.

Do you know where your jobs will be? or in what trades? some places have more work in certain trades than others,

Hello Frost fam, :jiggy:

We moved here a few months back and are enjoyng it. We live about 10mile out of Brissy just SW of the city, in a place called Mount Ommaney. I drive into the city each day and it takes anything between 20 - 45 minutes depending on traffic. It's an easy run there. Buses run to the city very frequently 3 or 4 times per hour and can drop you right in the centre. Also trains close by at Darra and Oxley. Maybe our circumstances are different to your in so much as we have no children to consider.

I'm sure you will get a broad view of the Brisbane suburbs from everyone on here. As Cal says, a little further out from the CBD makes a big difference in terms of rental or purchase prices. Mount Ommaney isn't near a beach, but is a beautiful peaceful suburb, yet has everything on your doorstep. A great shopping centre currently being extended big style, golf courses all around, and natural bushland and walks close by. Everything is neat and tidy it's beautiful. There's cycle paths here which will take you into Brisbane as well and the weather makes that so easy. I know there are excellent schools in Indooroopilly about 10 minutes from us, and that suburb too has a great shopping complex.

Just take a look at the Our Brisbane web site, Home | ourbrisbane.com and that will give you loads of info on suburbs. The Gold coast is South of Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast North of Brisbane. I think it fair to say both are beaut places but they are very different from one another. Gold coast more designed, but with many natural beaches and places with all the theme parks and entertainment, great for kids,. It can get a bit crowded with tourists in the peak season though. Also I was reading, there is a big commercial drive on by the Aussies to really sell the Gold Coast as a World attraction for tourists to greatly increase the business there over the next 5 - 10 years. So properties may go up and there should be a lot of business opportunities. We like the GC vey much. The Sunshine Coast more natural and unspoilt also a bit hotter. That's just my observations and I'm sure many will disagree. Either way you can't go wrong. Other nice areas I have seen near the coast are Manly, Wellington Point, Cleveland and Ormiston, these are just South of Brisbane. Hope this is of help.

We have been going throught the VISA App then house seeling stage for the last 2 years now and we are finally off in 5 weeks time . During this time myself and Lisa , my wife have been on 2 x one week long visits to brisbane to have a flying look around and we used www.ourbrisbane.com as a basis of which suburbs to view the first time and found it to be quite a good help. We then used www.realestate.com to work out prices for these areas. I think that if you have the chance to , get over to brisbane on a mad flying visit as we did , as its a real benefit in the long term and it doesnt have to cost the earth. We left the kids in UK with grand parents and flew the cheapest flights , stayed in a cheap motel ( which was superb ) as we only used it to sleep in and covered loads of brisbane from 6am till 9pm every day. We also managed to open bank accounts during this visit and then kept up on them online from UK when back home. We also brought Large brisbane road atlas which helped us further planning when back home. Google earth is a good tool too now as Australia has been mapped down to strret level so you can actually see the houses in every street . Anyway thats how we got on and it might help you

regards

Hi, thanks very much for your info.

Its very hard deciding where to make a start, i am sure we will get there in the end.

My partner is a Carpenter, we hoping he will find a job before we leave the uk, but quite possible he wont and will look for work once we out there. Do you know of particular areas of Brisbane looking for Carpenters?

Hi, thank you for your info.

You were lucky to visit Brisbane before you moved over permanently, Unfortunaltly we are unable to do that.

I will look at the websites you suggested and also google earth too. I am sure it will all fall into place in the end and we will get there.

Hiya Guys

I think where ever you decide to settle in and around Brisbane/Gold Coast area your hubby would find work quite easily ,Tradesmen are really in demand especially with all the new houses/estates being built, south side of Brisbane especially. What is hard, is securing work from the UK ,we tried this approach and got very little response to our emails, however on arriving Gary had a choice of where to work with a handful of job offers, from experience we feel its better to approach companys in person where possible. If i can help with anything drop me a pm and ill try my best

Hi

I have assisted UK families move to North Lakes (40 mins drive north of Brisbane) & close to beaches. However, if not tied to the city the Sunshine Coast offers all that families need. The relaxed lifestyle, numerous beaches, good schools, affordable housing, outdoor living.

if I can help more let me know

Hi, thank you for your email.

How far into the visa process are you? Unfortunalty we wont be visiting before we leave the uk. Once those visas come we be leaving it all behind and not returning hopefully.

My children are nearly 3 and just turned 1.

We been doing some research and found north lakes, but not looked into it much yet, didnt want to temp fait with the skills test coming up soon, once we know thats been passed we will do lots more research, but I was aware it had redcliffe beach but didnt know about any of the other info you had said. But we was aware it was 30 mins drive from the city if my partner could not get work around north lakes.

Redland bay, Cleveland, Thornlands, Victoria, Point, Birkdale, Wellington point are the areas to look at. I have checked out most north and southside suburbs and i will explain what the advantages are of these areas.

We went for a balti at the only balti probably in the southern hemisphere but def only one in australia.

This is place we went to: click on link.

The Spice Avenue Balti Restaurant | ourbrisbane.com

The restaurant has photos of brum on the walls instead of usual indian culture stuff on walls etc. Definately going again food was awesome. very busy there and theres a wait but its worth it. All english people that go there mostly brummies and black country people too. There was a crowd from dudley but all wolves fans mostly so had bit of banter on the football.

had a dozen people on our table, introduced jane and the kids to my new ozzie mates from brum and other towns in uk. Janes cousin Angela and her aussie friend Shane was there too whom i invited over to help jane mix in. Also baggies Steve has arranged for us all to go to watch the match at his albion mates house tonight to have bbq and watch match on his plasma screen, not met him yet, but he knows were coming over and said were more than welcome. So we will meet some more albion friends today.

Tomoro going to cleveland sands to meet anthony whom is from uk. There were going to watch queensland roar in the a league at this bar down there.

This afternoon taking jane to the ikea to get some things for the house. Exactly same as the one in wednesbury inside with exactly same items. So when you go to wednesbury ikea you can pretend your in australia and i can pretend im in wednesbury (as if) hehe. Only give away is people walk round in flip flops shorts and t shirts.

Its another clear blue sky day today, had couple of partly cloudy days in the week, place starting to dry out now no rain in over 3 weeks. very english summer weather here at moment and looking forward to next month when it will be hot enough to take kids to water parks etc and sort out some annual passes.

This weekend going to enjoy the football thou, recording the everton v blackburn and liverpool v sunderland games to see too. Chelsea, man utd, and every other game is on to but don't think will be back in time to select match for the 3pm kick offs. as all are on live and have to press red button on remote to go to menu to select game i want.

also few doors down from spice avenue balti is an english supermarket called 'britain on the bayside'.

http://www.britainonthebayside.com.au

thats there website

All these things from back in england. went to hairdressers and while having my hair cut the woman was from kent talking in her cockney accent. The shops you go to half the time its a uk person serving. Friends say as much as 40% of the population in this area is from the uk. I have been on busses and a few times they are from the uk.

Kids start school week on monday. we went to the school yesterday and many of the kids are from england too and was told not to worry about them they will settle in quickly here.

Not missing anything yet from england, all the things i liked in england, most of it is over here anyway, baltis football, all here.

Do miss family etc and will look forward to seeing them again next year. Anyway who visits will see how much higher the standard of living is here compared to england.

If this place was in england it would cost 4 or 5 times more that what we pay here. The homes would be over 500k to 1 million quid instead of 180k-250k we pay here for a massive home in a top class area.

So far enjoying the people i have met, the kids and jane, balti's football, the wonderful weather, litter free towns, friendly happy aussies out and about. Smell of fresh sea air in the garden. Able to plan going out not worry about the weather. Coldest winter here for 20 years so we was told last night. 5c at night 20c in daytime.

lots to gain out here.

take care all you poor buggers in england with the sky high gas and elec bills with winter on the way dark nights in winter, sooooo glad to see the back of english winters i hated them with a passion. Every winter no sun and miserable grey skys and watch your money burn away when you have the fire on. Glad to see back of that. Spring here officailly in next 2 weeks.

1st sunday in september is fathers day here so get to enjoy it again yippeee.

All the best
