Nebsy
Hi! Are there any Plumbers/gas fitters out there that have had experience with the Vetassess plumbing assessment? Got my exam at Blackburn UK center in a few weeks, Just checking if any pointers on things to brush up on?
David H
Hi Nebsy. I completed my assessment in Blackburn last May. Nothing really to worry about. Straightforward copper work and a little bit of steel work. You have to follow a set of plans to the millimetre. Then you have to carry out some plastic work. Again you just have to follow the plans. We all completed in about 6-7 hrs. There is also some theory work as well thrown in. You sit around the table and just answer the questions for everybody to fill in. Bring your tools and bring a battery gun for screwing clips. And also knee pads.

Apparently a 2 hour interview before any practical, is that right?
David H
Unless it’s changed. There wasn’t a technical interview. Just theory work and practical. That’s maybe a new thing. To be honest there wouldn’t be much time for one if it’s 2 hours long.
Nebsy
Ah ok, possibly new then. Shall see soon enough. Thanks for the advice dave.
31Hillbury
I did the air con one in September, there wasn’t a technical interview in the format you mentioned above, there was 2 of us on the day and we were just asked questions as we went through the day. hope this helps, eddie
Nebsy
I'm possibly mistaken. Maybe that's the only way they do it. Just the structure of the charges from them and this original breakdown attached had me expecting a few hours in an interview.
31Hillbury
Same as the one I did. I figured after doing it that’s it’s just another way to get some more money out of ya. Ed

Brianm93
Hi mate, out of curiosity did you go straight through vetasses or through the TRA then vetasses for the skills assessment?
Nebsy
Directly through vetassess mate. Trades recognition then comes from them. But I'm using an agent from start to finish for the whole process so they sorted it all.
worgraeme
Do you need to do the vetassess assessment if you are gas safe registered? I thought it was more just checking your paperwork and paying a fee (born optimist).
Nebsy
Yeah you have to do both. Think it was 8 years worth of payslips/p60s etc in the trade, plus all your certs, then once they’ve approved that, a practical exam at one of their training centres. My agent told me I wont need to do any practical exam, he said all I have to do is gather all my paperwork and evidence etc and if it all checks out then my skills assessment will be approved... So I’m confused about this. I don’t know if it’s different for me because I only have gas qualifications and no plumbing qualifications
Nebsy
Not sure. Could be different to go over as just a gasfitter then. I’m going on a state sponsored plumbing visa. It required all the paperwork etc then once that was approved by them an invitation to take a practical examination where you do some plumbing work, servicing a gas cooker, piping a boiler up etc nothing major. Your best bet to clarify may be emailing vetassess directly. I’ve done it a couple of times through out the process, they get back to you quite sharply.
