Depends on the age and citizenship of the kids. In Australia citizens can use smart gates from the age of 10, other nationals from 12 (or16. can’t  recall).

I can’t recall the UK ages for this though but it will be clearly signed and you have to queue to see an immigration officer at the desk if you can’t use the smart gates.
