Thanks for replying. Are the rates standard for everyone or different in suburbs? Is there a website where we can check prices or does it depend on size of property etc? Are the details told by a estate agent upon purchase?

Council rates vary between councils/shires and also between properties. The annual amount is often included in the listing but if not, the real estate agent can tell you the amount.

The shire we live in have particularly high rates and as we're on a large block our rates are nearly $3000 a year 😬
