Jess95 Posted August 15, 2018 Share Posted August 15, 2018 Hi everyone, After planning for over 2 year’s me and my boyfriend have arrived on the Sunshine Coast and the area is amazing! Not your average backpackers as we wanted to have a base for a few months at a time and do road trips/ day trips when we feel like it. The down side is that as we chose to stay in an air bnb and my boyfriend has found some casual work already, I’m feeling very lonely! I’ve been going out and about on my own but I’m finding it hard to connect with people whether I’m just a little nervous still being in a totally new country. I guess what I’m asking is that if anyone who is currently on the Sunshine Coast (I’m close to Mooloolaba at the moment) wants to hang out/go trips together/drinks/beach whatever then please let me know! digitalis Posted August 18, 2018 Share Posted August 18, 2018 (edited) I found this when I moved into a shared residence with an Aussie having previously been in a backpackers hostels. They're cramped and loud but they do provide a great social environment. When I moved into the house, a few miles away from the hostel I was at previously, I quickly became a bit isolated. You're kind of in limbo, as a backpacker you're at the bottom of the ladder in the ease of assimilation hierachy with Aussies i.e anything other than exchanging pleasantries, and yet to remedy this you either have to work a lot or have to move to a backpackers with it's associated downsides....it's a tough one. If I was you I'd stay put in your apartment, gain causal work with other backpackers and consider socialising in backpacker bars and areas. starlight7 Posted August 18, 2018 Share Posted August 18, 2018 Especially in the touristy areas of Queensland- can be very lonely. An English friend moved up there many years ago and she said she only made friends ( rather than just people to say 'hi' to) when she started working. Never looked back after that.
