Guest Propofol Posted July 2, 2008 Share Posted July 2, 2008 Hi, I'm going to Perth for a year/18 months to work as a doctor. My salary before overtime is $104K. I was wondering if anyone had any idea what my take home salary would be? Also, property rental seems expensive and I've heard of salary sacrifice but was wondering what I'll end up with in net pay and the effect on renting prices when this is taken into consideration. Does anyone here commute from Freo to the RPH? What do people think is the best bank account for WA? Is car insurance expensive in WA, the second-hand cars look expensive for what they are. Petals Posted July 2, 2008 Share Posted July 2, 2008 My best friend's son is a doctor and one thing I can tell you if the hospitals are like they are in Victoria you will get lots of overtime. He is a physician and now specialising in intensive care and anesthetics and he often works long long shifts. Way too long in my opinion. His life consists of hospital, study and what ever is left which is not much for fun. I guess you could look at the Australian Medical Association web pages to ascertain pay rates and also hospital sites. I do know that the bank's love doctors and they can get rates others cannot or so my friend has told me. I am also in ICU and anasesthetics, I'm used to working a 60+hour week so to actually be paid proper overtime rates will be a pleasant surprise. I have worked as a nurse in Icu in Perth in 2005/2006, I have a job at the RPH ICU and will be returning to Perth when we sell our house. We found that the police and nurses bank was the best because the charges were a lot less. I'm sure our car insurance was similar to here but when we return and buy a car we will shop around a bit more. As a nurse earning about $55,000 I took home about 1800 to 2000 dollars per fortnight. I worked in a private hospital that time round and the salary sacrificing package was not that good so my husband used his salary to sacrifice the rent!! Petals Posted July 3, 2008 Share Posted July 3, 2008 Morning, wanted to add to my post of yesterday that my friends son also does some work in private hospitals and he gets paid phenomenal amount for one shift in icu 1,000. You may be able to pick up private list too. Hours can be very long and sometimes he works a shift just gets home and back he goes. 16 hours the other weekend. At least he gets paid for the overtime now whereas he did not before at the other hospital which was his main training hospital. Each State has different rates of pay, for example if you lived here in Victoria at Wodonga you would get a lot less money than a doctor living in Albury which is just accross the bridge as they are joined. So if a doctor does shifts at the Albury base hospital a Victorian doctor gets less than a NSW one. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

What type of property? Freo to RPH, allow an hour. Banks, I use Westpac, as good as any. Car insurance? 22ys driving. Full no claims. $400 / 200 quid a year on a Holden wagon. Second hand cars are more expenxsive than the UK, but, GET OUT of the uk mentality!!! This is WA. Finally, if you can't live on $104k a year you've screwed it.
