Citizenship

We lived in Brisbane for 2yrs 10mths, we came home due to a family bereavement . We extended our Permanent residency until 2021 . If we go back how long do we have to be in the country to apply for citizenship ?? TIA x

Hi Noelle,

Under the proposed rules (not law yet), you need to live in Aus for 4 years as a PR to apply for citizenship.  I'm not sure what gaps are allowed in the 4 years.  Note that depending on where you are, there may be long delays in the citizenship application actually being processed.  In Perth, I know people who have applied last October and have now have their test in November 2017 and then it may be another couple of months to the ceremony.  So you may have to wait another 12-18months for the application to be actually processed and you get your certificate.

One of the migration agents will probably be along soon to fill in the info on the gaps.  It may be useful to post when the 2 years 10months was.

Everything is in flux at the moment and it look like the department are not processing applications until the new rules come out.

Under the existing rules you must not have been out of Australia for more than 12 months in the last 4 years in total and no more than 3 months in the year prior to application. On the citizenship page there used to be a calculator but don't know if it is still there
