Medicare/private health on a 457

Hi all,

We have just been granted our 457 visa, I have one question does Medicare suffice as adequate health cover or do we have to have health cover?

We will be under the joint $180,000 mark

We was on a 457 visa 2013 to 2015 but then we returned to the UK to have our daughter and during the duration of the visa we never had private health insurance

Cheers Mike

We were there and 2008-9 and didn't need any either. Wr are going back in March on 457 and have been told by migration agent it is now necessary to have visa compliant policy in place for the visa to be granted. However if you are from a reciprocal country Eg uk then once you have registered with medicare you will be able to get rid of the visa compliant policy. Medicare surcharge levy is something else which applied if you are above am income threshold and liable for mls. If so then a mls waiver policy can be taken out which is different to the 457 compliant policy.

Be careful though if you are relying on the reciprocal arrangement, it isn't full cover - it's essential medical treatment and they have been known to say that something like a biopsy for something which could be potentially nasty is not essential and that you should go home to get it treated. Will your employer stump up for private medical cover?

You will definitely need ambulance cover.
