Hi guys,

im hoping to get some advice. I am a qualified nurse and my husband and I have 3 young children. One of my girls has been diagnosed with lung disease and another has asthma which we can not get under control. Both of these we feel would improve in a better climate (uk and wet cold weather does not mix) when we have briefly looked previously it looks like a dead end with regards to healthcare and visas due to the illness, does anyone have any experience with this and can u offer any advice.

thank u in advance xx

Hi

I think you would be best advised to consult with a specialist migration agent/lawyer as your enquiry is complex. George Lombard is often mentioned on here and has a good reputation, he will probably charge a fee for his advice but it would save you money in the long run.

Good luck

Steve

I have never heard of anyone having a visa refused because of asthma, don't know what you mean by lung disease but as the poster above mentioned it is always advisable to consult an agent when there are medical considerations. George Lombard or Peter Bollard are often recommended in this area.

Having said that, I would not be assuming that a move to Australia is going to ease the condition. Climate is not the key cause of asthma and the high rates of asthma in Australia (higher than in the UK) would reflect that.

As an asthma sufferer myself, I would also urge you not to move to Australia on the basis of improving your child's asthma.

I had asthma from the age of 3 but grew out of it at the age of 18. Then when I migrated to Australia in my thirties, I got my asthma back again! My specialist said that the East Coast of Australia is one of the worst climates for asthma in the world - the warm humid climate is perfect for moulds and dust mites to thrive, and those are things that asthmatics can be very sensitive to.

When people recommend a warmer climate for asthmatics they will usually mean a warm DRY heat - which would mean moving to Adelaide or to a lesser extent, Perth.

I doubt very much that asthma would be a problem for the visa. The good thing is that because asthma is so common in Australia, you're likely to get better treatment for her. Some of the very top asthma specialists in the world are in Oz. You don't say what you mean by "lung disease" for your other child, is that the illness that you feel might be a problem?
