Is an Oz driving licence still valid with no permanent address in Oz?

My daughter is an Oz citizen with a WA licence living temporarily abroad. She is coming for a holiday to Queensland and asked if her WA driving licence is still valid. I know that a UK licence is no longer valid in the UK if you no longer have a permanent address there. Is it the same here in Oz?

If you are no longer resident in the UK you are supposed to return your licence, there is a hefty fine for not advising DVLA of a change of address, some people get around it by using a friend or relatives address but that is probably not strictly legal.

If you return to the UK it is simply reissued without charge so there is really no reason to keep it.

As for the OP, does she have a driving licence for the country she is living in? If so that would be the one to drive on, the legality of driving on a QLD license without an address I don't know.

No, not really as she doesn't need one living on a complex in the wilds of an African country. They travel to the nearest town by plane!

Yes, most people don't, the problem comes when there's an accident and the insurance won't cover because the licence is not valid.

I wouldn't have even thought about it- thought any Australian licence would be valid anywhere in Australia so long as it has not expired time wise. Why would they care where you live? So long as you have an address somewhere( for all those fines!!) can't imagine it would matter.

+If you hold a Queensland driver licence, you must tell the Department of Transport and Main Roads within 14 days if you change your name or address.

When you tell us that you have changed your name, address or gender, all products you have with the Department of Transport and Main Roads in your name will be updated, including your:

  • driver licence
  • marine licence
  • industry authority
  • adult proof-of-age (18+) card
  • ship registrations
  • vehicle registrations.+

Yes, this is what I found and this is why I am wondering whether the licence is still valid if you have left the country and therefore don't have a permanent address here. This applies in the UK. There has been a whole thread on this elsewhere on the forum. If you go to the UK now for example and try to get insurance so you can drive a relative's car you can't do it any more, they won't insure you as your UK licence is no longer valid, (this is from the insurance companies). They also won't insure you on your Oz licence, so the only way is to hire a car. Although I think there are some specialist companies that might do it, but it costs a fortune. I am speaking from experience. Lots of people don't realise this and that's fine unless you have an accident and then there might be problems. I have contacted the Dept of Transport a while ago but still awaiting a reply.
