Guest northernlove
Hi there we recently found out we are pregnant, its very early days but right now we are weighing up our choices, kids were never on our bucket list but certain circumstances have made this quite a shock and like it could work. Our first thought is that we can't afford it, we have a income of 120000 before tax but only 70000 with only one of us working its not bad but its not great we can defiantly get 100,000 for a house deposit from family so would have a reasonable mortgage here in brisbane, we are wondering as we are only here 2 years come august and a little under 1 as residents do we get any help from the government like back at home, child tax credits and such and how much would that be a week? any help would be appreciated as the clock is ticking and this is a really hard choice for us. PS no judgments please
Quinkla
Congratulations! There are people who bring up families on that kind of money so it must be possible. I would talk to Centrelink about entitlements and general advice. I would also look at the finances involved in going back to work quite soon and paying for childcare (expensive) - even if it is not your preferred option then you would at least know what the options were. PS no judgments please Not sure what you mean by "residents" as everyone living in Australia is a resident - do you mean permanent residents? In that case yes should be some child care related benefits. Nothing for temporary residents (457 visa holders say). You should also talk to the employer as presumably there are employer related parental payments.
