health undertaking service for TB - anyone referred?

hi everyone,

have a query which i hope some one will be able to help me with.

we are in Oz and applying for ENS visa. Went for my medical and have received a letter referring me to the health undertaking service for TB testing. Now, this has come as a shock and am left wondering where this leaves us with our application.

I do have an abnormal x-ray due to a bad case of pneumonia. This was declared for our last visa and was passed through the radiologist and then LCU with no probs. Thought there may have been an issue then, but since there wasn't put it out of my mind.

Now, after medical here, again declaring the info and showing letter from my old consultant regarding the pneumonia I have received this referral and need to attend the chest clinic as a suspected TB case. Have never had TB, have been immunised against it, and only have abnormal xray due to lung scarring after the pneumonia, which I have already demonstrated to them.

Am obviously really concerned now that this will affect our visa application and am wondering if anyone has experienced this?

many thanks

Hello Peppapig

Welcome to Poms in Oz.

Please don't worry about this. It has NO - repeat no - effect on your visa. Please see Factsheet 22, which is here:

Australian Immigration Fact Sheet 22. The Health Requirement

The MOC obviously knows that you do not have TB because you have not been asked to undergo any specific tests for TB.

I personally know 4 people who have had to give Health Undertakings in connection with their applications for Contributory Parent visas. Two of them are fathers who have had pneumonia. The third is an old lady of 80 who was exposed to TB in the distant past without actually catching it herself. None of them had to have any further tests of any sort apart from a new x-ray post-arrival in Oz.

The fourth is a father who worked with asbestos when he was a young man. He has tiny traces of asbestos in his lungs. The MOC sent him to a specialist who knows about asbestosis. The specialist did some other type of scan and confirmed that the guy does not have asbestosis and is at no greater risk of developing it than anyone else. Nonetheless, the chap was required to give a healht undertaking.

All 4 have had their second x-rays and all 4 have been released by the Health Undertaking service without any further conditions or requirements about anything.

I reckon that the MOC simply has a bizarre belief that chest x-rays performed by the health undertaking service are somehow better than chest x-rays done by anyone else!

Best wishes

Gill

thanks for that Gill, much appreciated and has somewhat reassured me. Although, as we are in Australia now and applying for an ENS visa our health results have not got as far as being sent to immigration. The HSA medical place in Melbourne have referred me onto the migrant screening centre. Have not signed a health undertaking, have just been referred to them. Does that make a difference would you think?

Am trying to stay calm as i have the advantage of knowing what is wrong with my xray whereas some people don't, and have been immunised against TB too, but can't help but worry about the effect this will have on our application. I know they are really twitchy about TB. My appointment has been moved forward at my request so not so long to go until we can hopefully get it all resolved.

aah, the stress!

Hi PP

Yes it does make a difference and I have just realised that I did not read your first post properly.

Evidently they intend to test you for TB! However since you have not got TB, don't worry about it. No doubt they think their own testing arrangements are better than the opinion of your old consultant.

Well - it is DIAC's money, so let them waste it on assuring themselves - and you - that you have not got TB.

Without wanting to seem flippant, if they mutter TB, threaten to sue DIAC for personal injury. They accepted that you did not have TB before you went to Oz. Therefore if you have it now, you must have caught it in Oz. If that happened then the MOC must have let somebody with TB into the place, or their border controls have failed to stop TB-infected illegals from getting in. As that wise dog Snoopy once said, "It isn't whether you win or lose, but how you place the blame!"

But seriously, I'm sure it is nothing more than a complete waste of your time and theirs, plus a complete waste of their money.

The worst they would do is to put your ENS application on hold until they have clobbered any sign of TB, and they do that by giving the person antibiotics. They might feel inspired to give you some precautionary antibiotics, but that would be about it, I firmly think.

Try not to stress.

Best wishes

Gill

Hi

I am not a POM actually a SAFFA and came across this whilst searching the net. I had been for a chest XRay (ENS Sponsor) in April this year. I have a scarring effect on my lungs...not sure what this was at the time and was highly stressed when I heard TB. I had a bad case of bronchitus when I was little and suffer from bad cases of hayfever. I had since 1 April undergone approximately 12 different tests including scans, x rays, blood tests and a bronchoscopy. The results were negative which I found out last Friday. Today I got asked to complete a form 815...hubby was also requested to complete and sign the above a while ago, not sure why, I assumed because they thought at the time I had TB. I got told that every test needed to be done as I was South African and that is a high risk country...imagine how I felt. Also I had been in contact with people that had TB.

Even though I dont have TB, I am a bit stressed as to what the results of our application could be as my hubby is diabetic. So will sit tight and hope for the best.

Hope its gone well with you.

Gigi

Hi Gigi

Welcome to Poms iin Oz.

Don't worry. The Medical Officer of the Commonwealth would not bother to ask for Form 815 Health Undertakings if s/he intends to say that one of you does not meet the health requirement for some other reason anyway.

Once they have the signed Forms, the rest will go smoothly I suspect.

Cheers

Hi Gill

Thanks for your reply...I hope it all goes well too. I never once thought this could be so stressful.

Funnily enough I read something last night about refugees entering Australia, they surely dont have to complete stringent health tests like we do...I left SA in March 2007 and my X-Rays were clear, this leaves me to wonder what the health processes are in Australia....is it specific high risk countries they concentrate on and just leave the others to enter, with or without diseases etc...Interesting.

My thought is, if this is the route the health authorities followed for me, then put the same process in place for everybody, refugees as well. Wheres the logic to having different processes for different people, just doesnt make sense, does it.

Hi, I am new to POI and a little bewildered! I am soon to put in an application for a de facto visa. My girlfriend (Australian citizen) and I have lots of evidence for our 3 year relationship but I am a tad worried about the health check as I have had pneumonia. I know they are essentially only worried about TB/HIV/heart conditions and such but would someone mind telling me not to be a wet blanket and that they won't reject me due to the recent pneumonia...

Thanks,

Jon

Hello everyone,

I had read some of your comments regarding scar on lungs and other health issues. The same thing with me, I have a scar on my right upper lobe (lungs). It was remnants from my past Minimal PTB 17 years ago. I already had treatment by qualified doctors with medical certificates and proven to be inactive until now. Actually, I am working here in Muscat(Middle East) wherein we regularly undergo medical exam as require by the MOH.

We are about to lodged our 457 visa application. My family and I are scheduled to have a medical examination on an accredited panel of doctors here in Oman. What are the chances for us to pass the medical test and allowed to have a Subclass457 visa? Do you know some cases same thing with mine?

Thanks and hope to hear from you soon.

Rak
