HND Construction

Maybe slightly just to let a glimmer of light through.

BSc (Hons), MSc etc is what employers want really. I have an HND in construction from early 90's and its not even considered in any applications however neither is my Chartered status!

My chartered status IS recognised, MCIOB (member of the chartered institute of building) and I am currently being considered for MAIB (member australian institute of building) so would be twice chartered. My point was that applications for jobs like the Vettassess applications only ask for BSc, MSc or PHD qualifications. My current employers only once the offer had been accepted asked for details of my chartered status.

My experience is that your UK qualifications are useful for getting you a Visa into the country, but almost useless for using to get you a job once you are here, having the knowledge (your training) and experience count for more, I have not once been asked about my UK qualifications for any job ( I have HNC in construction, plus a diploma and several other certificates) they show a more dis-interested view of UK qualifications if anything. I have done other (laughable) training whilst here, and have a local Diploma in construction and Level IV in civil construction, but these were all provided by my current employer, as there is some tax advantages for committing a certain value to training, at 59 I really did not need or see any value for either party, for another Diploma.

But though the above seems gloomy, a positive and lively attitudes work well here, so having confidence, through your UK training, and a belief in your own ability should help you through.

Good luck. Keith.

So. What would be your guys best opinion on what I should do? As im currently only 20 and I finish my HND next year. Ive studied three years of joinery and carpentry too. Only had slight on site experience. Any advice?

Get some work experience under your belt and look at Australia in the future. Qualifications are rarely enough to get a work or occupation related visa into Australia.

Well my oh were recognised , he's ceng in uk ...mimeche ...and ceng here , NPer and me hubbie went to engineers australia for his assesment . And the job he's just finished asked for a ceng and the one he's in now asked for a ceng , he had to show his quals and whatever . His quals were recognised they have mutual agreements , and he got a job after 5 week in the country . And my hubby didn't do a msc but he has the equivelant . But some jobs will ask for ceng aswell :) and how the job markets been in for people too :) the company he works for now had to have a ceng for some reason :) he knows why . I only eaves drop ! Lol. He signs stuff off I know that so they taken the responsibility so I understand but not fully :) obviously me hubbie does .

Haha! Sorry for getting you into trouble! From the general opinion on this thread A degree and experience is where it's at. After my HND, I'll get myself to Sheff Uni, get my degree then get a few years work experience under my belt.

Yes, I think that is your best option for getting work here in Aus, as well getting the Visa I believe.

Good luck mate.

Work experience is obviously good. my partner has 10years experience in civil design from the UK but from our experience the employers here want Australian experience.

Therein lies the 'catch 22'! still need the uk work experience to get the visa though, which in turn should give you the confidence to tough it out initially here in Aus

If your absolutely determined to come over then I would strongly recommend specialising in a field which Aus need and want or an industry where UK is ahead of Aus. I very fortunately find myself in this position, both being specialist and industry where UK is years ahead of Aus meaning I was able to secure work before leaving UK and now have secured a more appropiate position now.

My hubby was offered a job with monedelpehous ,from uk , but at the time he didn't want FIFO so he turned it down . Gets here and no work about not much anyway .

So yes get experience what aus needs and one you've landed ya first job ya should be fine .

Took ok my hubby 5 week after arriving get a job ...no australian experience ,mand a couple come back too over qualified for what we need .

My my hubby hadn't worked in oil and gas in uk niether . He worked in water , power , nuclear and defence .

So people Were sitting on his cv .

Then he rang a consultant met for a coffee . He got his first job from that in oil and gas . People said it's cus u have no oil and gas experience , but the manager of the company said no it's agricultural compared to nuclear and defence carnt believe you wouldn't get a job anywhere in the world with your background .

So after 6 month there he got another job with another company , more money , but after 6 month short time . So offered job over here within the week . Work on at the time . Now oil and gas prices fell .and things coming to a end things getting shelved ect.

So the job he has now he got offered within 24 hrs of having no work book to, and he got it because he worked with the general manager at the second job he had . So the general manager said he caught him at the right time lol . And he loves it .

So when you get here and you have a long time yet . Get ya contacts . And you will be fine . :) I know it's not same industry but it will work same contacts and things lol :) good luck :) he works in hydraulics now because he's fab at that too :) so as much as u can learn in uk learn it :)
