Laptop Insurance

I haven't even thought about it, but I will be worrying about it now. Before you do anything check if it's covered in your home contents insurance.

Been stung that way before - took out "portable items" cover and paid extra for it on the insurance, only when we tried to claim (for a smartphone) we were told "oh, no, doesn't include laptops or phones!" - like we are in the habit of taking anything else out and about with us! I've found one company that offers cover for $60 premium per laptop, but then realised it was in the US! Might email them anyway to see if they do worldwide cover.... Found another company that offers insurance, but then in the small print it says you have to have bought the laptop through them! Still looking.....

It's probably too late now but we are just going through this ourselves as the eldest now has a laptop for school and managed to leave it at school the other day. Fortunately it was locked in his locker but it made us think about insurance for it. After much searching I've found only two companies will insure laptops outside of home contents insuance - Comminsure and Covertech. Covertech are a specialist technology insurer and have a special insurance policy for school kids. Most other 'quality' (or expensive) insurance companies will include laptops in the home contents quote but you would have to add portable contents cover to your home insurance and with some you may also have to specify the item covered. I'm not sure that the budget insurers would cover laptops and/or phones so if this is important to you when taking out home contents insurance make sure you read the small print.

Just thought I'd come back and update in case anyone else is in the same situation. I insured the laptops with Covertech in the end $148 I think for a year for two laptops, and have recently needed to make a claim. They couldn't have been more helpful and efficient, settled up really quickly, great on the phone with queries. Highly recommend them.
