Pymble Ladies College vs Ravenswood School for Girls

Hi Caramac, thanks for your reply. We're looking at living around St Ives... I'll be working in North Ryde. I'm hoping to find a school which covers primary and high school. I've contacted all schools around and these are the ones which have space to take mid-year 2016. Problem seems to be that my oldest starts high school feb 2017 and some schools already over subscribed.

Whilst PLC looks great I'm concerned over the size. I thought Ravenswood looked good. Can you let me know why you wouldn't recommed it?

My daughters went to Ravenswood. I wouldn't recommend it...

PLC is huge and still seems to have a problem with bullying according to friends, but I've never been there. Are there any other schools you're considering?

Hello Caramac, I'm new to this forum and thread, but we are currently looking at Ravenswood among others for our high schooler. Would you be willing to PM me as to what you didn't like about Ravenswood - was it too formal, too elitist? It's not our first choice, but our daughter may end up wanting to go there. Would be grateful for any insights! p.s. they seem to have a new head of school as of this summer.

Hi, we're moving to Sydney and trying to decide on best school for our 2 daughters (9 and 11). Both PLC and Ravenswood look good. Does anyone have any experience with these schools or can offer any advice. Many thanks.

I suggest Hornsby Girls High School instead : http://www.hornsbygir-h.schools.nsw.edu.au/home

It has a very good reputation.

And as says Wikipedia "Academically, Hornsby Girls' is regularly ranked first in the Hornsby region in terms of Higher School Certificate (HSC) results and is repeatedly ranked as one of the top five performing schools in the state".

It's academically selective, so it should rank well.

It's also quite difficult to get a place if you're coming in in a non entry year. Our older two were assessed as being able enough to secure places (at Sydney Girls' and N Sydney), but there weren't any for them, so we were advised to try again for year 11.

They all have a high proportion of Asian students which isn't a problem in itself, but the girls did seem to spend a lot of time going from school to music lessons, to tutors etc and that wasn't something we wanted.

Mind you, what we got wasn't something we wanted either so it's definitely worth looking at!

Hi Cara

I know it's been a few years since you posted this message about not recommending Ravenswood, would you mind sharing why that's the case? Because like a few people before me we are also considering sending our daughter there... it'd be very much appreciated if you could PM me as I cannot seem to PM you (maybe because I'm new to this forum?!).

Many thanks

Hi Homersyd, I wanted to share that we visited both Ravenswood and PLC back in late 2015 after I posted my question above.  We ended up choosing a 3rd school in part due to location.  Here was my take on the schools:  Ravenswood was smaller, perhaps a bit more exurban vs suburban - very convenient to the train line, seemed to attract perhaps more analytical-type kids/maybe not as humanities-oriented (I could be wrong), was very close to a boys school so more co-ed interaction (which I actually liked).  They had a pretty cool library and I liked their pool. Overall, a bit more modern architecture if memory serves.   Pymble was a lot bigger in a quieter setting with a lot more greenery.  I think it even had sheep and goats (which I loved).  More sport options I think. Seemed a bit more affluent. The people were very nice and welcoming at both schools so no issues there.  During my daughter's secondary school years, I didn't hear complaints about Ravenswood, but I did hear them about a couple of other schools - ones not mentioned above.  Not sure if any of that adds to the information you've already gathered...
