Guest
Hi! I'm looking at moving to Sydney shortly. I've calculated my expenses and after rent (And other things i'll need to continue to pay for back home) I'll have 1600aud a month, excluding bills. Is this enough as a single man? Thanks! Shirley that depends on what you need the money for.
Guest
I'm talking very generally, but I'm asking about bills, food etc and some spending cash
Guest AltyMatt
If you still have to pay for food, internet, phone, gas/elec, health insurance, transportation (commuting + a car/motorbike) then you may find it tough. Do you have to buy furniture too? Bear in mind most property rentals will be unfurnished.
flag of convenience
Once a roof is secured most can be done. It is more a question on a lowish wage in an expensive city just how content you'll be with the means for only limited consumption.
Roberta2
I suspect that many things you probably now buy without thinking very much will get a lot more scrutiny. e.g. takeaway coffee. $400 a week for a single person is not much. Of course, it CAN be done, but you would be watching your pennies carefully.
CaptainR
You could definitely live on that, but as mentioned above would have to be careful with your money and forgo the luxuries. Eating and drinking out in my opinion is more expensive here then in most other countries I've lived in, but I have occasionally seem $10 burger+beer advertised etc. On the other hand, once you've made some friends, heading with a case of beer and some food to a public barbecue pit somewhere nice is a great way to spend an afternoon without breaking the bank. canadianaussie
Its doable; a year ago in Sydney I was spending $600/2 wks after rent and transportation. This more than covers food, eating out once a week and other incidentals. No room for saving or 'big ticket' items however. I also did not have private medical insurance. canadianaussie
BTW is it 1600/month or 1600/4 wks. Not a major difference but a low salary those few extra days can be significant..

Would you be ok on about £200 per week in London after rent? It probably about the same.
