Hi all you lovely Queensland folk. Was thinking of doing a trip to Queensland at the end of the year. Plan was drive up from melbourne, drop kids with partners sis in Ayr then go off for about 10 days as a couple, do the reef and generally explore- this will be our honeymoon. Have heard bad things about the weather up that way tho so was wondering what it's really like in terms of rain accessibility stingers in water etc. would be leaving melbourne on dec 26, hitting Ayr around 29th and leaving Ayr around jan 10th to return home. Should we be fine or better to just look at another destination?

It might not be as wet as you think though of course, it IS the wet season so you never know. This year has been very wet but for the last few years, there was rain on no more than 3-4 days of that 2 week period. But remember that it's still warm and unless there are floods, you can still get outside. Middle of the stinger season though. Much better to make plans for a winter trip if at all possible. Here's a link to the daily rainfall data for Ayr.

This past couple of Wets have been poor, with well below average rains due to the El Nino effect and people are still camping and doing the 'rubberneck' thingo. Christmas time is usually a few violent storms where it can drop 3" in a couple of hours. Last Dec, we had 4.5" for the month and January we had 11".The Townsville/Ayr region is partly in a rain shadow (Mackay ave is 70"-75" Townsville is 45")

Might pay to check towards Sept to see if there will be another El Nino.

There are quite a few low areas that get flooded when a shower goes through; so much so that the State Govt has been planning to upgrade the Bruce Hwy.

And...It will be humid.

Cheers, Bobj

The Bruce always gets cut off just after Townsville. They have been promising to upgrade the Bruce for many years I wish they would get on with it as our shelves are starting to get empty in the supermarkets already.

It is a tough call to be honest. One thing you can be sure of is that it is going to be hot and very humid that is guaranteed as are stingers from November until May and we have had a few beaches closed this season because of them. What can't be guaranteed is what our wet season is going to be like. As others have said it has been bad for us with hardly any rain. In fact last week was the only real wet we have had in over 12 months. You also need to bear in mind it is our cyclone season. Chances of one crossing where you are can be slim but then look at the one in the Coral Sea at the minute, if it crosses around Bundaberg it will be the first cyclone to cross in the SE of Queensland in 20 years. So there is always that chance.

For me the best time to come to come to the Far North is between June and November, it's perfect.

  • 1 month later...

Wet Sticky. Humid, and Totally Uncomfortable. We live at Tin Can Bay. Global Warming is now a stark reality on the sunshine coast. Never in my 30 years have I known it to be so hot. and humidity is a killer.Remember to bring heaps of Mossey repellent.
