Pregnancy on a 457 visa

My partner and I have been here for 2.5 years on a 457 visa and are thinking of trying for a baby- does anyone have experience of being pregnant on a 457 and if so can you do it all via the public system? We do have BUPA cover(not inc pregnancy) but have never been able to claim anything on it so considering downgrading to ambulance only and saving the $400 we pay each month. The medicare website states that with the UK -Aus reciprocal healthcare arrangement "almost everything" is covered but despite my best efforts I haven't been able to find out what is not covered! Any advice on the pregnancy question and any related costs much appreciated!

Yes, on a 457 visa, if you are from the UK you will get everything an Aussie gets on Medicare. However, different areas have different systems. Some areas don't have any bulk billing ultra sound places so you pay for some of that. Some places you pay for the NT blood test only. Some you get free antinatal classes, others you don't.

Remember that when you get a referral for scans etc, you can take them to any place who does them, not just the one listed on the referral. It can be the difference between a couple of hundred dollars or free.

On a 457 visa you won't be entitled to any family payments, or paid parental leave (pretty sure on the last one).

Just to say, that the NT scan is not obligatory - some women/couples choose not to go ahead with it - in which case it costs you absolutely nothing! (That's the one that is used to calculate the odds ratio of the baby having Down Syndrome). For that and other specialist scans, the advice I received was to go to a specialist ultrasonography clinic where the songraphers and radiologists do such scans regularly; but of course they tend to be a bit more expensive.

Hi! sorry but i have the same problem, we are planning for a baby and we just moved here last December, we came from the UK (but not british) and got medicare for the whole family. I read somewhere that (UK reciprocal) medicare doesn't cover pregnancy. Can you please provide more information on this matter please. GP's, check-ups, scans, Caesarian section or normal (i had CS with my other baby)? Thank you so much! oh by the way we are in QLD.

It does cover pregnancy. We've had people go through it and it was all covered as much as an aussie's pregnancy would be. That means that at some places you will have to pay for scans if you can't find a bulk billing place.
