Hello again all

Just another question out of curiosity. If parents were granted a contributory parent visa , when do they have access to social benefits and Medicare. Is it immediate or is there a waiting period - for example do they have to be in Australia for 2 years before they can apply.

Medicare is immediate.

PRs are eligible for all Centrelink payments provided they meet all of the eligibility requirements for the payment in question.

They are immediately eligible for Family Tax Benefit A and B, Childcare benefit, Childcare Rebate, Baby Bonus and Parental Leave Pay.

There is a 2 year waiting period before they are eligible for Newstart Allowance, Youth Allowance, Parenting Payment, Carer Payment, Sickness Allowance, Mobility Allowance or Pensioner Education Supplement.

There is a 10 year waiting period for Disability Support and Age Pension.
