Simonr
Hi all. We are looking at moving over to Melbourne in March/April next year. We are just starting to look at what to take, and what to sell/chuck. We have a fairly decent piano. It's an upright piano, worth about £1200. Has anyone shipped a piano before? Is it worth it? I don't want to spend 5k on shipping it over. Thanks in advance.
scuffythetugboat
You have a piano worth £1200 and it costs £5000 to ship it over? I didn't get an O level in maths but I can work this one out!
Diane
We shipped ours in our container but to be honest should have not bothered, it really doesn't like the dry climate here in South Australia and we've never been able to tune it properly since. In fact it's now sitting on our outside patio, waiting for us to have a piano smashing contest! Melbourne obviously isn't as dry and it shouldn't cost that much to ship it - just get it cased up separately in your container if you're bringing one. It did not cost a lot to ship - Crown shipped it as part of a 1/4 container for around £2000. They made a bespoke crate for it too. AndrewC
Make sure the keys are not made from Ivory. Newer pianos will be fine but if it is vintage this could be an issue.
