johnlondon
Hello. I was just wondering once you are granted a skilled visa in Australia you are usually given up to 4 years there, are you required to carry out health and character checks once a year in Australia while you are there? MaggieMay24
I'm not sure what you mean "you are usually given up to 4 years there". Once you are granted a 189 visa, you can live in Australia indefinitely. You can apply for citizenship after living in Australia for 4 years as long as one year has been as a permanent resident. I believe a police check is required for the citizenship application.
steven106
can you apply for per reses pretty much straight away from a 189 visa?

Croft
can you apply for per reses pretty much straight away from a 189 visa? 189 is a permanent visa. After 4 years you can either opt for a Resident Return Visa (RRV) or citizenship if you wish to travel. Edited to add unless you're covered by one of the residency time exceptions - http://www.citizenship.gov.au/applying/files/support_docs/support_1300t_1290/resi_variation/

Quite right of course - misread the dates on my visa grant notice. Immaterial to me as we were covered by one of the residency waivers so acquired citizenship after 90 days.
