Hi guys, I've just joined the forum to find out information on job opportunities in brisbane for the duchess, a newly qualified nurse and myself a plasterer of 8 years. Is work in abundance here? Also could we have some info on what brisbanes like as a city for lifestyle? We've read books but people's opinion who live there already is the best you can have! I play rugby and the missus is part of the rowing club back here in Bristol so we're quite outgoing! Any info would be much appreciated! Thanks Joe and Carrie

1 Brisbane is great, does have some crime but very easy to get around has most things and has a good social scene. They are trying to push historically sleepy Brisbane into the next World City and it is starting to get there. Also remember no beach (well natural) in Brisbane however Gold Coast and Sunny Coast are close neighbours.

2 Plaster should be looking Brisbane but also Gold Coast where alot of building work is taking place due to development and Commonwealth Games.

3 Don't forget experience, being newly qualified maybe an issue

4 Everybody says Aus is expensive, yes a little more than SE UK but cheaper than London. Earnings tend to compensate.

5 Choose your visa carefully as you may need to move around a little for work.

Best of luck with it all.

ps with your rugby is it union or league as that will make a big difference to whether you are accepted in certain areas, Brisi I believe is league.

Hi chicken thanks for the reply she's degree registered so she informs me so hopefully that will work in her favour? She has worked within the nhs for 7 years and aquired a BA honours degree in early childhood studies and currently works in a high dependency unit in Bristol childrens hospital after qualifying! Would that be looked upon as experience?

She should be fine with registration here with a degree. Have a look at vacancies in the areas you might like to live to get a better idea of job prospects. Try hospitals or even the state health department websites. Seek or other websites could give you an idea too. Good luck

Thanks chicken I have been scouring through that thread looking for answers. Just got to work out where the best place to locate will be. We've been looking at north lakes I believe it's called as it isn't too far out of the city for work etc does anyone live here or have any suggestions of this at all? Thanks Joe

Sorry Joe can't help you with areas in Queensland we are in rural Victoria. I believe they're a lot of English in Northlakes though. You could try searching on facebook poms in Queensland i'm sure there's probably are page there or the poms in oz facebook page. Good luck though.

Just to clarify, when you say newly qualified but working in an hdu do you mean she has just started working in the last couple of months? If she has less than 1 years experience then I think it will be a real struggle to find a position. Unemployment amongst newly qualified nurses is a real issue at the moment. If you look on seek.com.au and the Queensland health work for us website you will be able to see vacancies for paediatric nurses. I can't comment on plastering but there is certainly a lot of house building going on.

Hi Gaia yes she has started working in a HDU since June, we have a road trip planned from brisbane to Sydney for 4 weeks this November so when we get back she would of been in that position for 6 months. she will probably have a years experience by the time were in full swing in applying for positions would that be suffice? Someone mentioned to me that in Australia they don't train as children's nurses so it's a specialist area is this correct?

thanks for your feedback guys much appreciated :-) cheers Joe

I am newly qualified (still haven't technically got my pin) and I have had offers of interviews when we go over and I will have around 9-10 months experience. I am a mental health nurse. I believe there is a brand new children's hospital opening in the Sunshine coast in early 2016 and they may source staff earlier to ensure they have enough. There is a website and a lot of information on careers if you search for it (I once came across it by accident).

As long as you have enough funds to survive initially for a few months and come over on a PR visa then I am sure with a little bit of hard work you should be ok. I think its a case of keeping costs to a minimum on arrival, such as no luxury days out till you find work. We are doing it with 3 children in tow and my husband whose line of work is quite hard to find!

Good luck!

A years experience will be needed I think. All the agencies require a minimum of a year to register. The new Sunshine Coast hospital is a general hospital not a childrens hospital. A new childrens hospital is opening in a couple of weeks but they are closing 2 childrens hospitals to do this. If you go on the Queensland health work for us website you can do a job search also seek.com.au is a good website to give you an idea of vacancies. There are some nursing specialties that are in real demand at he moment, mental health and theatres for example, but paediatrics not as much.

Joe, do have a look at south side Brisbane too even down towards Gold Coast as most building work for yourself is down in this direction. Spend some time in N&S Brisbane as they do have a slightly different feel due to transport links etc.

Daughter finishing her nursing degree and lucky enough to have got a place on a graduate nursing program. You need degree plus one year experience to qualify as a nurse so vitally important she gets at least a year under her belt as getting on a grad program is super competitive in QLD with many new nurses out of work. Children's nursing more competitive than geriatrics/mental health etc..

North Lakes is popular (I think you can get nice houses there cheap) but it is a difficult commute to Brisbane along a very busy motorway. You both have jobs that would enable you to work out of Brisbane (Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast) and these can be wonderful places to live. Try to avoid a long commute to Brisbane if possible.

  • 5 weeks later...

Both Nurses AND Plasterers are in high demand here in Darwin.

Have a look at http://www.australiasnorthernterritory.com.au and register yourself there too.

If you do get to Darwin, send me a message as I have some plastering work from time to time (Just Casual though, sorry I'm not directly in the Building Industry).

Darwin is booming and has great opportunities for most skilled areas.
