Extending a visitor's visa

My parents came to stay last Xmas on a one year visitor visa and left in about February. Due to an unforeseen situation they are coming back in ten days to support me and my family. They can be here for up to three months at a time and then have to go off shore I believe. Is there any way round this and what happens at the end of the time ( this visa would run out in December and they may need to stay a bit longer). They have open return air tickets to prove they are not intending to stay for ever.

Has anyone managed to extend a visa like this before on compassionate grounds?

There are some very generous provisions for parents as it is, there is now a five year parent visa, which means they only application e in the five years but it only allows 12 in every 18 months on shore. I think that is pretty compassionate, there isn't anything else unless they go for full parent visa.
