Hi ,

Anyone know what the town Leeton and the surrounding area is like for a Family from the UK to live in ?

Thanks

G'day mate, Leeton, in the MIA (Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area) is strictly farming and associated work. It's good, if you like small, fairly isolated areas.

Cheers, Bobj.

I wondered what it would be like to live in a town like Leeton? Hard to get a job unless you are skilled, but maybe a good place to become a part of a small community? I like going to country towns, but I know it can be a problem with medical services, particularly specialised ones. There was an article in one of the Sydney papers recently on this subject. There was a little boy from up near Grafton, what, 400? 500? miles from Sydney, and he became very ill and had to go to Westmead Childrens' Hospital in Sydney. His parents' lives, already in upheaval, had to both take time of their jobs to be with him.

It is such a contrast with life in Sydney where you can see a GP seven days a week. I know one practice that bulk bills and is open from 7am to 10pm every day, in Bankstown. If you need a dentist, you can usually get one same day, and some are open weekends, plus there is Sydney Dental Hospital here in Surry Hills.

I miss village life from England, but there you can live in relatively remote area, but still be only a few miles from a big city.

What is it like living where you are Bob? I know about your fishing but what about when you do need medical services? Is that easy?

I went to St George in Qld a few years back, really liked the place, talked to Pommy bloke who worked in one of the pubs, married to Aussie. He seemed to have good life.

Medical services? a 100 km round trip, nothing out of the ordinary for country folk. The Base Hospital in Mackay is about as up to date as you could get; the govt has just spent $400 million and has another $8 million to finish the job.

Qld has spent squillions on tv adverts for medical services in the country areas for medi flights. We have the fling doc, careflight and the resue helicopter. No big deal unless one is a hypochondriac.

Amazing how people can cope in the country towns.

Cheers, Bobj.
